After a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s, legendary University of Texas head football coach Darrell K. Royal passed away this morning. His 20 year tenure with the Longhorns produced 3 national championships (’63, ’69 & ’70), 11 Southwest Conference Championships and an overall record of 167–47–5. In 23 years as a head coach at the collegiate level DKR never had a losing season. He played college ball at Oklahoma, coached at Texas and bled burnt orange until the end.
For Texas fans he will always remain larger than life and his legacy will live on forever on and off of the field in the stadium that bears his name and beyond. In every facet, Coach Royal is the standard that all coaches aspire to achieve.
Thoughts, prayers and condolences to the Royal family – we lost a great man today.
