Texas coach Mack Brown says reassigning defensive coordinator Manny Diaz to a new job in the athletic department and moving Greg Robinson to defensive coordinator isn’t a panic move. He’s trying to fix the Longhorns defense, he says. Robinson’s last two defenses at Michigan failed to crack the top 80 nationally in total defense, but Brown says Texas has talent now the Wolverines didn’t then.
Whether Brown’s decision works or not may ultimately decide his fate in Austin. The Longhorns had eyes toward a Big 12 title and more, but at 1-1, they’re well behind schedule heading into Saturday’s game against No. 25 Ole Miss. Since losing to Alabama in the 2010 BCS National Championship Game, the Longhorns are just 23-17, and the Longhorns have gone 11-15 in Big 12 play over that span. Those are the numbers that may cost Brown his job if he can’t get Texas back to being the Texas team that won 10 games in nine consecutive seasons from 2001-09.
