In his weekly press conference, Texas head coach Tom Herman informed the media that quarterback Shane Buechele suffered a shoulder injury in Saturday’s loss to Maryland. However, Herman reiterated that the true sophomore is his quarterback and will play against San Jose State if it’s “not a detriment to the team.”
Buechele will miss Tuesday’s practice and continue to be evaluated during the week. In his absence, true freshman Sam Ehlinger will take reps with the first team offense. Although Ehlinger is not yet ready to see game action as a freshman, Herman thinks he’s close. “Is [sam] ready to start? He’s as close as any true freshman I’ve ever been around.” While Ehlinger takes reps with the ones, Jerrod Heard will perform “double duty” and get time at QB/WR.
Although Herman did not seem particularly worried about Buechele, he will be monitored throughout the week. Many Texas fans have been eager to see what Sam Ehlinger brings to the table, but this is not the way that wanted it to happen. Herman may be able to afford giving Ehlinger significant time against San Jose State, but likely does not want to start a true freshman in the Longhorn’s first away game against the USC Trojans. If Buechele can play, expect to see him trot out with the first team on Saturday. Regardless, the door is now open for Sam Ehlinger. Texas fans will get the opportunity to see what he’s made of on Saturday.
