The NFL draft is being held and over the first two days Texas joins Florida State, Pittsburgh, Florida, TCU, UCLA and Tennessee as the only Division I schools that did not have a player selected in the first three rounds of the draft.
The Longhorns’ last national championship was in 2005 and the following draft in 2006 they had four players taken in the first three rounds. Led by Vince Young and Michael Huff in the first, then followed by Cedric Griffith (2nd round) and David Thomas(3rd round), Texas had success on the field and at the draft table.
Lack of recruiting does more than hurt the on-field team. It hurts future recruiting. Premier high school athletes want to go where they will be noticed and drafted. A draft like this year’s is not good for anyone involved in UT Football.
We seem to have turned it around with a powerful recruiting class this year and with the early verbal commits for 2013. And we have history on our side. Texas ranks eighth in the number of players who have played in the NFL.
Good luck to all the Longhorns in this years draft class. Keenan Robinson, Emanuel Acho and Kheeston Randall are all projected as fourth round picks. Sadly my guy Fozzy is not expected to be drafted.
With better recruiting and the coaching changes, I am hopeful this year’s NFL Draft is merely a bump in the road. I look forward to seeing all of the Longhorns’ available draft picks not only play in the NFL but hopefully for one of our favorite NFL teams.
