The Texas Longhorns scored one of the biggest recruiting victories of the 2026 cycle on Sunday, landing a commitment from elite edge rusher Richard Wesley, a 5-star defensive end out of Sierra Canyon High School (Chatsworth, CA). Wesley, ranked as the No. 6 overall player in the country, No. 2 player in California, and the No. 1 defensive end nationally per Rivals.com, announced his decision after backing off an earlier pledge to Oregon. Texas edged out both Oregon and Ohio State to secure the game-changing defender.

Standing at 6-foot-5, 250 pounds, Wesley possesses the kind of physical tools and elite production that immediately elevates the Longhorns’ 2026 recruiting class. His commitment gives Texas a cornerstone piece on the defensive side of the ball, one that can shift the trajectory of the entire defense from day one.

Recruiting Recap: A National Battle

Wesley’s recruitment was nothing short of a heavyweight bout between college football powerhouses. Originally committed to Oregon, the Ducks were early favorites and held his pledge for much of the process. However, after a dominant 2024 season, Wesley reopened his recruitment this spring.

Ohio State, known for its legacy of developing elite pass rushers entered the mix aggressively. But in the end, it was Texas, led by head coach Steve Sarkisian and a relentless defensive staff, that sealed the deal.

The Longhorns sold Wesley on their SEC trajectory, defensive vision, and the opportunity to make an early impact in Austin.

On the Field: An Edge Rusher Built for the SEC

Wesley brings a rare combination of explosiveness, technique, and raw power that makes him one of the most complete edge rushers in the 2026 class. His 2024 junior season stats:

  • 44 total tackles
  • 16 tackles for loss
  • 9 sacks
  • 29 solo tackles

His first step is elite, often winning reps before offensive tackles can react. He has an advanced understanding of leverage and angles, pairs it with superb hand placement and he finishes plays with closing speed and physicality.

He’s just as effective against the run, using his length, pad level, and strength to set the edge and control his gap. Wesley can rush standing up or from a three-point stance, giving Texas versatility in how they deploy him in multiple fronts and pressure packages.

What This Means for Texas

Wesley’s commitment is a major win for Texas, not just because of the player they’re getting, but because of the programs they beat to get him. It reinforces the Longhorns’ rising status as a recruiting power in the SEC.

He immediately becomes a headliner in the 2026 class and a future centerpiece of Texas’ defense. His presence could also serve as a magnet for other elite prospects in California and nationally.

This is a commitment that can set the tone for Texas defensively and one that sends a clear message: the Longhorns are ready to compete with the best, on the field and on the trail.

Looking Ahead

With Wesley in the fold, Texas gains a potential future All-American and NFL-caliber edge defender. As the Longhorns continue to build out their 2026 class, the addition of a player of Wesley’s caliber elevates the standard and the expectation for what’s possible in Austin.

He is the kind of talent that changes games and programs.
