Sophmore running back Johnathon Brooks was named a first-team Midseason All-American by the Associated Press on Wednesday. Brooks, a native of Halletsville, Texas also earned Midseason All-American Honors from USA TODAY, FOX Sports, ESPN, and CBS Sports among others. The Big 12 leader in rushing yards per game also had his high school jersey retired in his home town last weekend.

Brooks’ offensive numbers are good enough to rank him ninth nationally in total rushing yards (726), fourth nationally in rushing yards per game (121) and sixth in the country (FBS) in all purpose yards per game (141.17). After starting the season as the backup running back to freshman CJ Baxter, he has clearly solidifies his role as the starter for the No. 8 ranked Longhorns. His production has increased drastically over the last four games, as Brooks has surpassed the century mark in each of them and amassed a total of 617 yards on the ground and five touchdowns.

While Brooks was the only first-team selection, Texas defensive linemen T’Vondre Sweat and Byron Murphy were tabbed to the second team by the AP. Sweat and Murphy help anchor a defense that ranks 25th in total defense and holds opponents to an average of just 16.3 points per game.
