GAME DAY: No. 3 Texas Longhorns vs. No. 12 Oklahoma Sooners

Texas and Oklahoma will meet for the 119th time on Saturday and they will do so, each with undefeated records. The unblemished record by both teams headed into the Red River Rivalry marks the 31st time in history, with Texas holding a 15-14-1 advantage in those contests.

While the Sooners have won six of the last seven games against the Longhorns, Texas left the Cotton Bowl last year with its most lopsided win in series history, to the tune of 49-0. Second year head coach and defensive mind Brent Venables appears to have his team back to their winning ways after a dismal 6-7 overall record last season, and the Sooners are eyeing an upset over Steve Sarkisian and the third-ranked Longhorns.

Oklahoma has held opponents to fewer than 20 points in every game played this season and have given up just 54 points through their first five games. The Longhorns, however, are averaging 478 yards of offense and 36 points per game. Flipping the unit stats, Oklahoma ranks third nationally in scoring offense (averaging 510 yards per game) with the Longhorns boasting a Top-20 defense that gives up just 290 yards per game.

The winner will claim the last Big 12 meeting in the Cotton Bowl, as both teams will face off in the Southeastern Conference beginning next season. Moreover, a win for either team gives them the inside track to a Big 12 Championship appearance and one step closer to the goal of earning a spot in the College Football Playoffs.

Saturday’ will provide an explosive atmosphere with two talented teams and ESPN’s Game Day on-hand for good reason. Kickoff comes at 11:00 AM at the Cotton Bowl with the game being televised on ABC.
