Although the head coaching position at the University of Texas is “officially occupied,” there is plenty of speculation as to who will be the next head football coach on The 40 Acres. Nick Saban, Art Briles, and David Shaw are some of the heavyweights being named, but who are the “Plan B” options for Texas?

Rich Rodriguez

He failed at Michigan but I truly believe he wasn’t fully accepted as a Michigan man. Maybe he is happy just building a program instead of maintaining a powerhouse but you can’t ignore what he has done at Arizona. Not to mention the success he had at West Virginia.  If you give him the support, he will achieve success.

Tim DeRuyter

Yes he only has two years of head coaching experience but those two years have been fantastic at Fresno State. They have a great offense, a good defense and he has Texas roots. Again, this isn’t going to be a home run hire that Texas fans would dream of but DeRuyter is a solid “Plan B” coach.

Todd Graham

I know, the way he left Pitt was cold. But as you can see now, he made the right call. He is a fantastic coach that has rebuilt Arizona State into a contender in a very short time. Steve Patterson already has a working relationship with Graham. He wouldn’t leave a job like Texas (except if the NFL calls).

Jim Mora Jr.

A coach with NFL experience and who is already recruiting Texas hard to win at UCLA. He isn’t afraid to go out of a talent rich state to get the best players. If he came to Texas, he could continue to recruit Texas and supplement it with California talent to have a consistent contender every year.

If you’re seeing a trend here, the west coast has some of the best coaches in college football and all of them have been at their respective schools for only 2 seasons. They are not entrenched and loyalty is very little at this point. Yes, Texas can spend the money but why would the university spend that kind of money when they can get another good coach for cheaper? Keep dreaming about the big names but keep an eye out for these 4 coaches because one of them could be the next head coach at Texas.
