Even though it’s June, there’s a football feel in Austin.
After the Longhorns had their one-day mini-camp on Sunday, Texas coach Mack Brown gave his obligatory pre-summer press conference today. We look at a handful of notable names plus take a look and try to gage what the next three months have in store for the Longhorn faithful.
Kyle Kearns, Mason Denley, and Dylan Moses. You might not recognize those names yet, but you will.
Kearns, ’15 QB, comes from Pleasanton, California. What makes him so interesting is how his recruiting could shape the quarterback position for Texas class of 2015, and how he’s the first pro-style signal-caller UT offered since David Ash. Â He arrived Saturday, and took the Major Applewhite tour.

Denley is the ultra-athletic lineman/potential tight end from Columbus that wowed folks. Intriguing because of his athleticism and the lack of offers the UT staff has handed out at TE.
Moses is the 2017 prospect from Louisiana, whom Alabama and LSU had previously offered. His father and him came away from Austin blown away. Enough so that his father said via Twitter that Texas is now a favorite along with the Crimson Tide and the Bayou Bengals.
Jarrett Stidham, Victor Evans, and Arrion Springs. Those are three names, if you don’t know, you should.
Stidham has yet to start a game at QB for Stephenville, yet has offers from Baylor and Texas Tech. He might also have the strongest arm in the 2015 group. I saw Stidham play WR for the YellowJackets in the 3A State Semifinal vs Kilgore last December. The kid belongs.
Evans, from Dallas Skyline, definitely looks the part. All 6-foot-3, 220 pounds of him. With UT missing out on Katy Seven Lakes DE, Jarrett Johnson (he committed to Texas A&M on Sunday), Evans is the next in line.
I mention Springs, who should be no stranger to recruitniks. He holds as many offers as any prospect in the 2014 class, including Florida State on Sunday, and he’s said Oregon is his leader “by an inch” over Texas. Springs is a must-get from the standpoint that he’s one of the top DB’s in a position of anbundance. Guys like Tony Brown, Jamal Adams and Darrion Johnson most likely won’t arrive in Austin next signing period. Mack has to nab Springs to amend this.
In Mack’s presser, he revealed that wide receiver’s Cayleb Jones and Kendall Sanders would get one-game suspensions due to their run-ins with the law this offseason. Pretty sure they won’t be missed in the New Mexico State game. And almost certain Jones deserves more.
He also mentioned the hiring of Patrick Suddes was a ‘homerun’ in all regards. That’s Mack speak, folks. My favorite quote came from Mack was the,” We have one more run in us.” Last time I heard that, it was 2008.
He also talked about moving backup QB (Tatum high school’s), Jalen Overstreet to RB/WR, or what I like to call ‘gadget-back’. A role similar to Daje Johnson. With the emergence of Tyrone Swoopes, it makes sense.
Garrett Greanlea is taking a Medical Redhsirt, Jackson jeffcoat is ready to roll, and Josh Cochran will be limited in August coming off a broken ankle. Also, DE Torshiro Davis is up to 247 pounds. Bennie Wylie is earning his paychecks, guys.
One more tidbit on the commitment of Arizona 4-star QB Kyle Allen to Aggieland today. It’s eerie how similar Mack Brown and Kevin Sumlin’s rises have been.
Mack won a Heisman and a Cotton Bowl victory over Mississippi State in his first season. Sumlin won a Heisman and a Cotton Bowl victory over Oklahoma in his first season. Then both coaches signed the top out-of-state QB in the following class. For UT, it was New Jersey’s Chris Simms. For A&M, it’s Allen.
Just very scary the similarities of both coaches.
