Four star linebacker Jonathan Cunningham has committed to Texas, providing a significant boost to the Longhorns’ defensive lineup in the 2025 recruiting class. Cunningham, hailing from North Crowley High School, made his decision after receiving 20 offers, ultimately choosing Texas over Utah and TCU.
Ranked as the No. 47 linebacker in the country and the No. 68 prospect in Texas, Cunningham stands out with his long, lengthy frame and his ability to play off the ball in space, making plays in the open field. He plays fast but remains under control, showcasing the speed necessary to cover receivers in the slot, as well as tight ends and he has the skill set to pick up running backs out of the backfield. He is an effective pass rusher who uses timely blitzes to disrupt plays in the backfield. Cunningham is a special teams standout who has the ability to block kicks, causing crucial turnovers. His ability to be a contributor on special teams could lead him to seeing some early playing time.
At 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds, Cunningham possesses the frame to add healthy bulk while maintaining his speed. He is stout against the run, playing with great leverage and he has speed to make plays from sideline to sideline. He moves fluidly in space when he drops back in pass coverage, making him a perfect fit for the Longhorns’ defense. Cunningham becomes the 14th commitment in Texas’s 2025 recruiting class and this adds another top linebacker prospect to pair up with Elijah Barnes, strengthening their defensive prospects for the future.
