Texas is losing another key assistant as Terry Joseph, the Longhorns’ secondary coach, safeties coach, and defensive passing game coordinator, is heading to the New Orleans Saints for an NFL opportunity. This news was first reported by Anwar Richardson of Orangebloods.
Joseph was originally hired by Steve Sarkisian in January 2021, and his impact on Texas’ secondary has been significant. He played a vital role in shaping the defensive backfield, developing Thorpe Award winner Jahdae Barron, who is projected to be a first-round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. Under Joseph’s guidance, Texas’ pass defense improved considerably, becoming one of the strengths of the team in recent seasons.
A Louisiana native, Joseph’s ties to the region now bring him back to his home state for the next chapter of his coaching career. His departure marks the third major assistant loss for Texas this offseason, following Blake Gideon (now defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech) and Tashard Choice (who left for the Detroit Lions).
Sarkisian now faces another key hire as Texas looks to fill Joseph’s spot and maintain momentum coming of a SEC title game appearance and a berth in the CFP this past year.
