The speculation that redshirt freshman quarterback Connor Brewer would seek a transfer from the University of Texas was confirmed as Brewer’s mom told ESPN’s Horns Nation on Tuesday that her son was indeed planning to leave the university to play football elsewhere. Horns 247 broke the news of the transfer today, which comes as no surprise, especially given the fact that Brewer would have an uphill battle to solidify a backup role on the team this season. David Ash is the undisputed starter and with Case McCoy leaving for an extended mission trip in which he will miss most of the summer workouts, the second and third string spots are up for grabs. More than likely these spots did not favor Brewer who would have to beat out Case McCoy and Tyrone Swoopes for position. The Texas coaches certainly like what they have seen early on from Whitewright’s Swoopes, and McCoy, a senior, will have a place on the squad once he returns from his 10-week trip to Peru. Jalen Overstreet, recruited as a dual-threat quarterback in Brewer’s class, will more than likely move to defense or be utilized in package plays on offense. Additionally, throw in the fact that stud quarterback Jerrod Heard (Denton Guyer) lands in Austin next season and things get even more competitive for quarterbacks vying for a spot on the Longhorn depth chart.
Brewer has a great arm and good potential, make no mistake about it. He played high school ball at Chaparrall High School in Scottsdale, Arizona, and committed to Texas over schools like Alabama, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Michigan, Nebraska and Arizona State. Look for Brewer to head West and play closer to home in a Pac-12 offense, where his pro-style passing skills will serve a team well.
