The Longhorns took care of business in Waco this weekend, defeating the Bears handily by a score of 38-6. Now on the horizon is an undefeated Kansas Jayhawks team that has given Texas plenty of trouble in the past few years. Here’s what Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian had to say about the win in Waco, the upcoming game against Kansas and more:
- “Complimentary football” and “disciplined” were a few words Sark used when describing how his team played Saturday. Noted that the red zone defense has been one of the best in the country and recognizes that Kansas is now 4-0 in back to back seasons through their first 4 games.
- Regarding Kansas dual-threat QB Jalon Daniels, Sarkisian said he “throws the ball all over the place… they’ve got great schemes and concepts… he taxes you both ways…” Daniels may be the best QB Texas will play up to this point in the season, and Sark recognizes his ability to scramble and make big plays.
- Sarkisian spoke highly of Jonathan Brooks, especially for being a “threat in the pass game” and filling in the main role while CJ Baxter was injured. Brooks had 18 carries for 106 yards and 2 TD’s against Baylor, along with a catch for 18 yards.
- Sark, when asked about how Kansas impresses him the most: “They’ve done a good job utilizing the transfer portal… a good job implementing their schemes… they’ve stayed true to who they were… a lot of credit to them…”
- When asked about the loss to Kansas two years ago at DKR: “We’ve come a long way as a program in a lot of phases… we don’t have to go backwards.. we have to focus on the task at hand…” He added later on, “In a weird way, I’m kind of glad it happened.”
- Sarkisian: “We feel like we are the best developmental staff in the country… on the field, off the field, in the classroom…”
- Individual player updates: Sarkisian says WR/PR Xavier Worthy still has extreme confidence in himself when returning punts following his fumble in Saturday’s win. He also added later that safety Jalen Catalon is “not on a pitch count” even though he played just 17 snaps against Baylor.
- Sark on the balance of his offense: “We are not one dimensional… when people try to prepare for us, they kind of have to pick their poison”
- Regarding quarterback Quinn Ewers, “He’s at his best when he’s a little bit more loose.. I want him to enjoy playing and have fun, and that’s okay when you put the work in…”
- Sarkisian was asked if Kansas was a “trap game” and seemed to be completely aware that it’s not as they are a tough team.
Let’s see if the ‘Horns can remain undefeated before heading into the Red River Rivalry.
