Outlook for Jordan Barnett:
The Forward position is loaded with talented players, so it’s going to be tough for true freshman Jordan Barnett to find playing time for the Texas Longhorns. His talent is undeniable, so he will see playing time this season, the question is how much? I expect him, in the first 4 games, to hover around 5-7 minutes per game while the team gets familiar with the different rotations. Then, after the 2K Classic, expect Barnett to play 10-15 minutes per game to acclimate him to the style of basketball Rick Barnes wants him to play. Once Big 12 season arrives in early January, I expect Barnett to be a solid contributor, but one that will fill minutes for Myles Turner or Jonathan Holmes if they get tired or in foul trouble.
I haven’t seen anything that would show me that he is ready to be a consistent starter in college basketball yet, and he doesn’t have to be. Barnett would be well-served to learn from senior Jonathan Holmes and junior Connor Lammert…when your number is called, perform at a high level, coming off the bench. Perhaps the most important thing for Barnett this season is to cherish the position he’s in and absorb everything.
