After the Foreman brothers, Armanti and D’Onta from Texas City, committed to Texas last week, it continued a stream of recruiting momentum swirling through Austin.
Coach Mack Brown and his staff have assembled a Top 5 ranked class for 2014 with only one major hole: cornerback.
This is a bit odd considering the state of Texas is loaded with defensive backs for this particular year. And the last blue-chip level caliber corner in the group, Arrion Springs of San Antonio Roosevelt, just committed to Oregon. Which means that Texas will have struck out on one of the best groups of secondary members the state has seen in years, maybe decades.
How does this happen to DBU ???
For starters, it’s not one main thing, rather a series of mishaps that led to this problem.
Waiting to offer kids too late, and not being able to offer early playing time because of an influx of veteran DB’s are the two main issues.
Add in Tony Brown’s sister runs track at LSU, the growing sense of prospects wanting to play in the SEC, and a particular stud that favors UT, that’s been kicked out of school, moved, and faces pending issues with the law, and you have a recipe for disaster.
It reminds me of the quarterback class of 2003 in Texas when the Longhorns virtually struck out with all the big name signal-callers.
Rhett Bomar, Bobby Reid, Matt Flynn, Stephen McGee, Kirby Freeman. The state was loaded with QB’s and UT landed none.
Of course, Vince Young signing the year before didn’t help, but they offered almost all those quarterbacks. I bring it up because you can’t quantify a class or position on a one-year basis. It must be broken down year-to-year.
Just because Texas didn’t land one of the crown jewel defensive backs in this class doesn’t mean anything more than it just wasn’t meant to be. And remember, UT has offered most of these DB’s, with Bishop Dunne’s Nick Watkins still a possibility too.
Before you go crushing Mack and his staff, remember these years happen in college football recruiting. And usually, they work out the way they were meant to. Besides, Jalen Campbell, Keke Coutee, and Johnny Shaw are in the 2015 secondary fold. And they should shine.
Texas quarterback commit, Jerrod Heard of Denton Guyer, is at The Opening in Oregon and putting on a show.

In hoops news, Texas point guard Myck Kabongo signed as an undrafted free agent with the world champion Miami Heat last week. He wasn’t selected in the 2013 NBA Draft after leaving Austin early following his sophomore campaign. He’s just another example of wasted talent and kids bolting for riches that don’t exist.
In baseball news, Texas sophomore shortstop, CJ Hinojosa is playing for Team USA and is destroying the ball. In his first 20 at-bats, he’s hitting .350, with four doubles, one walk, and zero strikeouts. That kid is destined for a breakout 2014. Stay tuned.
Quote of the Week: “I wanted to test how good our methods were. I wanted to take the high-level athlete who is maybe raw as a passer and see if in a short amount of time we can polish them. And what I’ve seen, it’s coming to fruition. Now, to his credit, Heard spent a ton of time with the playbook.” Trent Dilfer on UT QB-commit, Jerrod Heard, at The Opening by Nike
Tweet of the Week:Â
“ When people only have negative things to say about UT, my brain’s like “How can you hate from outside UT, you can’t even get in.”†#truth
