There was no practice today as the Texas Longhorns get set to start two-a-days on Friday. Coach Mack Brown sat down with the media to answer questions about Desmond Harrison (which resulted in no answer), the quarterback situation, the offensive line, defense and a whole lot more.
We’ll let you watch it all in its entirety but a few key points for those that want the thumbnail on today’s presser:
- The team is extremely cognizant of the new rules changes. They are practicing like the rules are being enforced, and this week’s scrimmage featured Big 12 Conference officials.
- Tyrone Swoopes is nursing a sore hamstring. It doesn’t sound like he has quite claimed the 2nd string spot, which currently belongs to Senior Case McCoy.
- O-Lineman Josh Cochran is battling a shoulder injury. Not sure if he will be ready to go by the New Mexico State game.
- Jalen Overstreet has made strides at the running back position. We’re still not sure if Overstreet will be a package guy or have a regular role at a regular position. Jonathan Gray appears to handle the Wild Horn best in the eyes of the coaches, and with three returning running backs it will be tough for Jalen to contribute there.
- WR’s Jaxson Shipley and Mike Davis are practicing at full-speed but aren’t allowed to be hit. Both guys are expected to be full-strength for the season opener.
- The defense looks MUCH BETTER.
- The kicking and punting jobs look to be Anthony Fera’s to lose.
- Alabama is STILL the team to beat nationally, and NO, there is no mention of Nick Saban coming to Texas in this press conference.
- Mack Brown is a TEXAN.
The face of this team is waiting to manifest itself but they shouldn’t wait too long – the season begins against New Mexico State in roughly two weeks.
Back a year or two ago we would have to manually type out all the things Mack Brown said in his weekly press conferences (and we did) but thanks to modern technology, the University puts in on video. Grab a beer, pull up a seat and listen to Mack’s 8/15/2013 update.
