Sunday represented an opportunity for the Longhorns to win the Red River baseball series at Globe Life Field against Oklahoma. In a game that was a tale of two halves, the Longhorns batting order came alive with a late resurgence, mounting a sizable 12-8 comeback victory over the Sooners.
The series finale began with a slow start for Texas, after starting pitcher Lucas Gordon was pulled after allowing four earned runs in just 3.2 innings pitched. In addition to the struggles on the mound, the Longhorns were hitless until Austin Todd, who made his return to the lineup after missing a couple of weeks with an injury, chopped a single to second base in the fifth inning. Following Sooners shortstop Peyton Graham’s three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, extending Oklahoma’s lead to 7-1, it appeared that the Longhorns were well on their way to dropping the series to Oklahoma.
In the seventh inning, everything changed when Longhorns left fielder Dylan Campbell blasted a three-run home run, his second of the series, cutting Oklahoma’s lead to 7-4. Campbell’s round tripper sparked life into the Texas offense, evident when Murphy Stehly later slugged a three-run seventh inning home run of his own – tying the game at 7-7.
Campbell and Stehly’s home runs changed the narrative of the game, and ultimately fueled the team to pull away from the Sooners with a barrage of ninth inning fire power from Ivan Melendez, Austin Todd and Mitchell Daly, all of whom drove in runs. Thanks to Texas’s large 12-8 comeback victory, the Longhorns have won their series against Oklahoma and will now look to sustain their momentum against UTRGV on Tuesday night.
