Despite falling behind 2-0 early, the Longhorns scored three runs in the fourth inning to take their first lead of the game, one they would not relinquish against regional opening opponent Louisiana. Rylan Galvan’s double off of Ragin’ Cajuns starting pitcher Fluno Carson scored Kimble Schuessler, and Dee Kennedy’s two RBI single began the scoring onslaught for the Longhorns. Texas added seven more runs in the fifth inning, which was highlighted by Jalin Flores’ third grand slam of the season. The Longhorns extended their lead to 10-2. The Ragin’ Cajuns added two runs in their half of the inning to cut the Texas lead to 10-4.
Will Gasparino’s single in the sixth inning scored Porter Brown and Kimble Schuessler and gave the Longhorns two more insurance runs and a 12-4 lead. Louisiana added a run in the seventh making the score 12-5.
Kimble Schuessler had a big day at the plate, going 3-4 with two doubles and three walks. Schuessler also scored three runs. Jared Thomas, Porter Brown, Jalin Flores and Will Gasparino each had two hits in the game.
Starting pitcher Max Grubbs gave up four runs on five hits to pick up the win and improve to 6-4 on the season.
The Longhorns will next face Texas A&M in the regional winners bracket on Saturday, with first pitch coming at 8:00 p.m. on ESPN.
