Follow along as our Devon Messinger jots down notes from today’s home-opener between the San Jose State Spartans and the Texas Longhorns.
First Quarter:
After a tough start to the game, including a big dropped pass and roughing the kicker penalty, things have been looking up for Texas. For one, Arch Manning found Parker Livingstone on a 83-yard touchdown pass to kick off the scoring action. Afterwards, Texas defensive back Jaylon Guilbeau tallied an interception off of a tipped San Jose State pass. Lastly, to round out the corner, Manning and Livingstone connected once again for their second touchdown of the game.
So far this season, Livingstone might be the team’s biggest surprise. While the redshirt sophomore has plenty of potential, he has skyrocketed his way into a pivotal role on the team through the first two games.
Defensively, the Longhorns have been solid through a quarter but have also caught some breaks. Like Texas, San Jose State also had a big dropped pass and quarterback Walker Eget has missed some open looks.
Second Quarter:
What a way to start the second quarter for linebacker Ty’Anthony Smith. On a Spartans run play, Smith both forced & recovered a fumble – giving the Texas offense the ball. Seconds later, Arch Manning found Jack Endries on a quick touchdown pass.
Forgive me if this sounds familiar but, this time, Texas linebacker Anthony Hill forced a fumble which later set up a Arch Manning touchdown pass to Endries, their second scoring connection of the day.
Third Quarter:
Overall, the third quarter was a relatively slow one. That is, until Arch Manning found the end zone on a 20-yard touchdown scamper.
