Follow along as I jot down notes from today’s game between the Colorado State Rams and the Texas Longhorns.
First Quarter:
- Steve Sarkisian has (seemingly) rotated in more wide receivers already in the first quarter of the season-opener than he did all of last season. Of course, last year’s squad had a very solid starting lineup, but today’s game just goes to show that Sarkisian feels comfortable about his team’s current depth at the position.
- Through a quarter of action, the combination of Jaydon Blue and Tre Wisner has been solid. The east-west run calls have been slow to develop but Blue has looked strong and has showcased an ability to shake a defender or two.
Second Quarter:
- The Longhorns offensive line has gotten off to a slow start to Saturday’s contest. Through 19 minutes of play, the group has already tallied two pre-snap penalties.
- After a deflected pass resulted in an interception, Quinn Ewers bounced back and looked much more comfortable during the rest of the second quarter. Steve Sarkisian has seemed to simply let his playmakers make plays in the open field, which has uncomplicated the offense.
- Every single transfer wide receiver has had an impact so far early in this game. Both Matthew Golden and Isaiah Bond have tallied receiving touchdowns while Silas Bolden had a major punt return late in the second quarter.
- All in all the first half had its fair share of bumps, however, the Longhorns quietly were able to put up 31 points.
Third Quarter:
- It is always good when you can willingly substitute your backup quarterback in the third quarter. Of course, Texas’ backup quarterback is Arch Manning which adds to the excitement. As soon as Manning entered the game, he was firing away with his first play being a bullet to Johnny Cook for a sizable gain. On the same drive, he found Oregon State transfer wide receiver Silas Bolden on a crafty 5-yard touchdown pass.
