My hope is that they held him out because they didn't want to ruin his confidence and they will start designing the offense to fit what he runs the best. I understand there were some plays that no QB could make because of the rush, but Heard looked better on his first drive than Swoopes looked.

Heard's running ability is better than Swoopes and this offense needs that. I have a hard time believing that Heard can't develop into a better passer than Swoopes. Just because Swoopes has a stronger arm doesn't make him a better QB.

I wish we still had Bryan Harsin.

Whatever Watson's offensive game plan (pun intended) is supposed to be...it don't work against good defenses.

Or am I missing something? Doesn't it make sense to have a mobile QB if your O-Line can't pass protect?

Is it possible they held Heard out because they kind of know he will take over, but they wanted to see if Swoopes could regroup and do something? I think they knew this game was a wash, but they have Swoopes the opportunity to do something positive. Or am I giving the coaching staff too much credit. They have to know that Swoopes will not recover from this coming off of last year.

I think the same and I hope your right. If Heard starts against Rice; you are absolutely right

One more comment then I'm going to bed...Kris Boyd needs to be starting over Bonney at the other CB. Move Bonney to S and take Haines off. Jon is too soft on coverage (that probably falls on the coaches). Kris will be physical and hold his own on the outside. They need more aggression and Kris gives them that. He will give up some balls, but he will create some positive plays as well.

Swoops is now 20-47 for 150 yards  in the past two games and 48 of those yards were on one play. He also threw four interceptions in  the game before that.

I think this is a really truthful post. My concern at this point is whether or not there is enough patience in Austin for Strong to legitimately rebuild. I think we're less than six years away but obviously it's up in the air.

People seem to think that I believe the Horns will win out the rest of the year. I don't. I think this is an average team with plenty of inexperience to hold them back. I didn't enjoy tonight. We played a terrible game. And I seriously question a lot of things about our team. Namely, the decisions the coaching staff made on offense.

But what I'm not going to do is support this notion that the program is doomed under Strong. A lot of people are reacting emotionally to this game and it's clouding their judgement. This program is not beyond repair. It is most definitely in repair but it is not beyond it.

As I said before, freshman were the highlight of this game. If that doesn't make you feel remotely good about 2017 or 2018, I don't know what will.

People have this idea that because we're Texas, we're entitled to a winning program each year. That line of thinking is why the program collapsed into over-valued mediocrity after the 2009 championship game. Strong is desperately trying to get rid of that entitlement. It's taking time. Like all good things go.

I'm not sunshine boosting. I don't think this will be the last time we're feeling this emotional about a loss this year. But I do think that this program is capable of a come back under Strong. And I will defend that opinion if people want to challenge it.
I think what makes this loss so very hard to swallow is that we hear all spring and summer long "this and that" and "Swoopes is really changing and coming into his own" and "positivity..." Then we get this utter shit show. I mean tonight was a horrible game. Didn't look as if we had ANY game plan going in. Just looked like we showed up and said "f it, lets go." The offense sucked and the D sucked and it really looked like the coaches had zero answers.

Im willing to give the kids a certain level of a pass because they are just the pieces of the puzzle. The coaches on the other hand, it is their sole purpose to utilize those pieces in a way that ensures the best chance for success. I am a huge CStrong supporter. I think he is a great man, from all accounts, and a great coach. That said, short attention spans and lack of patience are def things not relegated to UT fans... I want CS to turn things around asap because this day in age he doesn't have 4 years or 5 years. Whether right wrong or indifferent it seems the going rate is about 3 years... Season one was 6-7, we'll see what season two has in store, but if by season three there aren't solid signs pointing to us going in the right direction I fear his time will be up. I hope Im wrong because is a true leader of young men and the last of a dying breed. So while I do share excitement in 2017 and 2018, I think it would behoove everybody involved to start making some things happen much sooner... The worst thing that this staff could do, IMO, is to keep playing Swoopes. He may be a good kid but there are good kids out there that can win. Roll with Heard and Locksey... Or Heard with Swoopes as his backup if Heard dies.

My biggest problems with losses like this and the last several losses of last season are that it doesn't make top flight kids want to go to UT. Ive heard the nonsense that kids want to go to schools that they can play right away. I partially disagree with that... MOST of these kids have no problem going somewhere to sit on the bench as long as they feel like the coaching staff will shape them and get them where they need to be for the draft. As long as we aren't having tangible success or legit progress its going to effect kids wanting to come in. As long as we struggle to get kids drafted, we're gonna have trouble. Ive read report after report on this very site from kids that visit UT. They love the program and love the coaching staff and really believe in what CS is doing, then they sign somewhere else. We can talk up 3 stars all day long if we'd like. There are some 3 stars that are the exception but generally 4 and 5 stars are that for a reason...

I know that went all over the place but I had some time to kill... But you and I both know that the only thing that matters is results and progress. We have to keep moving forward and showing progress on the field. Correction, we have to start showing progress on the field. I love potential just as much as the next fan but potential is just wasted energy if it's not realized. Coaching has to get better though. The End.

Just quit getting blown out game after game after game by more than three touchdowns and then come up with a game plan to beat a team we aren't expected to beat. My God, do we have to draw out for the coaching staff what is expected of them? Just win one game you weren't expected to win. And you can't count Iowa State as that game.

Charlie Strong walked into this season with the wrong coaching staff. He screwed up. Now is the time to see what adjustments he makes.

I disagree with your opinion on records but I respect it nonetheless.

I share the same concern. Strong may not be here to witness 2018. Doesn't change my excitement about the play of these freshman tonight.
it's really not an opinion. It's math. Mack was run after 8-5, 9-4, 8-5. And I totally agreed with that. After 6-7 and tonight's effort, 9-4 seems to be làughable.
The 'it's Mack's fault' defense gets flimsier every game.

Losing on the road to a good team isn't a killer. Looking like the JV against the varsity is.

The last three games have been some of the worst offensive football I've seen. That responsibility falls on Shawn Watson. He had the spring and summer to figure out who and what plays to run.

Charlie Strong fired his OC and hired Watson after the third game of his second season at Louisville. For us that's after the Cal game.

They have to know that Swoopes will not recover from this coming off of last year.
I remember one camera shot from last night... after a failed Texas offensive series, Swoopes sitting by himself, on the bench, with his head down.
What has changed from last year? In my mind... absolutely nothing.

A picture tells a thousand words.

"At the moment of truth, there are either reasons, or results." Chuck Yeager

Watson only gives us reasons, not results. Watson seems too emotional, and too attached to a player's feelings... especially Swoopes.

Give me someone who knows what they're doing... and is willing to make the tough decisions to get the right players, into the right plays, at the right time.
