Tom Herman announced after practice Monday afternoon that Sam Ehlinger took the bulk of the first team reps and will start the season opener vs Maryland.

2 thinks I liked bout this....

1. Glad he named a starter and didn’t milk it like he did last year.

2. He said there will be NO QB rotation. That’s a great thing in my opinion

I’m not social media coach or try not to be but I think Sam gets more out of the team. They support him and go to battle for him. He is no longer a freshman. This is gonna be a fun ride!

We will need Shane ready as we found out last year based on the way Herman pushes the QB  run game.
I see it being a lot different this year if O-Line and RB positions have improved like I have read bout. What else could Herman have done last year? Nothing else was working. Literally Nothing. WR core included. Fingers crossed for a competent run game, that’s the game changer.

Yeah, I wasn't saying Herman did anything wrong or bad.  I'm just saying an offense, even if they have great O-linemen, will get QBs dinged a bit if they run the QB a fair amount.  Ideally the run game will be more proficient via the RBs vs the QBs this year.

I hope the OLine is improved, but "improved" could be deceptive. If they are 2% better that's an "improvement".

I think its funny. Anyone else notice how many stories came out in the last week of how Buechele may have passed Ehlinger and would earn the starting nod?

Click pimps.

Herman also praised Cameron Rising, who figures to take a redshirt year this season barring something unforeseen.

It will be nice to redshirt some quarterbacks again. Maybe we will break the cycle and develop some depth again.
It should be easier now with the new redshirt rules. He's 3rd string, but given Ehlinger's concussion problems and Buechele's brittleness, I expect he'll have to appear in a few games.

No doubt. Ehlinger takes risks. Eventually the odds catch up with you. Buechele just has a knack for the injury. Can't quite get over that hump.

And I think we'll all love what we see in Rising, when he does get some time under center. Heck, Thompson too for that matter.

Not like Mayfield didn't run and take hits for OU last year. You have a mobile QB he's going to run some. Just have to know when to get down. Look how much Vince ran. But he knew when to get OO bounds and when to get down. Those are the things Sam needs to learn.

Vince was 6'5, 245 lbs. Nobody in the secondary wanted to hit him.

I never thought of Mayfield as much of a runner. Certainly a much softer runner than Ehlinger, who runs like he's a friggin fullback.

I like the choice.  I just hope Sam has learned from his frosh mistakes of untimely ints and fumbles.

I am anxiously awaiting RJ's arrival TBH in 2 years after a RS

Texas has to be able to run the ball or it will not matter who is at QB  this year.  The need for the offensive line to have improved and be able to open some running lanes will go a long ways in helping any of the Longhorns QBs  be successful.  Just my opinion.
