Brett McMurphy has reported that Auburn OL coach Herb Hand is headed to Texas as co-OC/OL coach. Hand has spent the last 2 seasons as the Tigers offensive line coach. Prior to coaching at Auburn, Hand was the OL coach and run game coordinator for Vanderbilt.  From 2007-2009, Hand and Gus Malzahn shared offensive coordinator duties at Tulsa. In 2008, Hand was a finalist for the nation's top offensive line coach.

HornSports for provide additional updates as we receive them.

It is unclear what this means for Derek Warehime. Hand could serve as the 10th assistant/play caller, or Warehime could be let go and Hand would solely coach the OL, leaving Texas the 10th assistant spot still open.

Would love to keep Warehime as a QC coach.

Hand has a decent reputation, has been a recruting coach, OL coach for most of this 18 years. Also, he has worked under a few pretty decent coaches. Hope he can really connect with the 2019 OL class and give us a presence in SE part of the country. Coached in Oklahoma, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Alabama.

From what I understand, Malzahn wanted to keep Hand at Auburn. The two worked together at Tulsa and the OL wasn’t an issue this year as they paved the way for Kerryon Johnson. Hand is also known as a good recruiter, so on its face it looks like a pretty solid hire for Texas.

Where this leaves Warehime will be interesting. That is one of Herman’s guys, so maybe he transitions to an off the field role and then takes another job later on down the line. That would be my guess instead of outright firing him now or right after the cycle.

He just signed an extension for $420,000 so we must have ponied up.

Daniel, if this is the case, that still leaves room for the 10th assistant. Or do you see Carrington keeping the title?

Too much going on that I can't keep it all straight.  Where does this put us with T. Dodge?

This is actually from a poster on another free site but it pretty much sums up where I'm at with this hire.

Here's what I know: this hire was clearly an attempt to address our biggest issues. That is good.

Here's what I don't know: is he a good coach, how will this work out, and was it better than the other options?

Time will tell. At least we're doing something, that's better than not addressing it at all.

I wonder why Coach Hand would leave Auburn. I'm wondering if potential OC (not co OC) was dangled. Interesting implications for not only Warehime but also Beck.

I’m not expecting Hand to call plays. Not sure why he left Auburn either, but like I said Malzahn didn’t want to lose him and here we are.

Something behind the scenes going on.  Coaching for 20 yrs, I actually appreciate the tight ship Herman runs. Not many leaks and staff business stays in the field house, as it should. Dummies like me can just wonder and speculate lol

Not sure if there is any truth to it, but I read that this info wasn't supposed to come out yet but that Auburn let the cat out of the bag.

SEC rant forum for Auburn Football. I just read posters posts on it to see their take on this. Almost all were glad to see Hand go. Sour grapes? Probably. I know nothing about Hand except what I read here today.

Dodge will hopefully be a QC coach and not on the field. I hope the same for Warehime. We need more good QC coaches. Mazzone is gone to Arizona.

Carrington will hopefully get a bigger role and a huge payday to remain part of the recruiting staff, not on field coach.

Hopefully that hat would mean we can hire yet another on field coach. Hand seems to have really good recruiting experience being a recruiting coordinator. Also he has worked with Gus for 4 years, RichRod for 5 and Franklin for 5.
