REPORT: Auburn OL Coach Herb Hand to Texas

Honestly don't know much about him, but his resume looks fine. TH targeted the biggest "need" coaching wise with the OL / offensive play, so I'm fine with that per se. We'll see how it plays out, but I have faith.

I'm wondering what will happen to Warehime. Will he be kept or let go; although the line play was crappy, he was dealt a pretty bad hand from the start, plus the amount of injuries we had. And he managed to reel in a fine recruiting class so far in my opinion in Angilau, Ghirmai, Moore, and Grandy. On the other hand, I don't really know what you will do with two OL coaches, assign one to the interior and one to the exterior guys? Not really sure here.

I think it will be only made official after NSD 2. Now that the news has leaked, they might want to consider putting him on a QC role until then to have him on campus for the official visits. Obviously, I wouldn't make sense to recall Carrington from the recruiting trail as of know. (Unless if you would let go of Warehime in the end, you might want to make the switch immediately)

Great article. I think moving Demarco Boyd to H-Back would also help, though I've been saying that since he signed on. He is powerful and can get u yards on carries and he can catch and is a physical blocker.

Could be right. Seeing speculation that there's still another coach to be hired that will call plays. A coach that specifically wanted Hand as his OL coach.
Someone with Internet access, time and football knowledge (I only have 2/3 ;) want to check play callers that have coached with Hand?

Chip Lindsey is the current OC at Auburn. He was previously at Arizona State and Southern Miss. Was at Auburn as an offense analyst when they won the SEC in 2013 and has a pretty decent resume.

Rhett Lashlee, who was just hired at SMU as the OC, was at Auburn 2013-2016 while Hand was there in 2016. He is 34 years old. Well known

John Donovan, currently an Offensive Quality Coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars, was OC when Hand was at both Vanderbilt and Penn State.  He is 43 years old. Not a bad resume either.

thanks, John Donovan is a new name.

whats Rich Rod up to these days..........

best thing is that it appears the Herman, isn't just keeping or hiring "his guys." He is trying to fix the issue and be proactive. I loved Strong but his biggest thing was that he didn't make the required change after his first year, it appears Tom is try to do things differently. Might not be right changes and might not work but i like that he wants to fix the O issues and is doing soothing about it. Personally i think another hire will be made, Warehime will hopefully be moved to QC coach.

Rich Rod is up to his eyeballs in sexual harassment allegations at Arizona that forced him out and brought (reportedly) Kevin Sumlin in to replace him.

After doing some additional research on Hand, I think he is going to be a good fit at Texas. He seems very detail orientated based but off some videos I watched. I doubt he will end up being the playcaller, which makes me wonder what might happen to Beck. Is it possible Herman hires another co-OC and then moves Beck to QB coach? That’s the most likely outcome I can think of.

I think and hope thats the outcome also.

Beck - QB

? - co-OC

Hand - OL/co-OC

Drayton - RB/assistant HC

Meringher - WR/passing game coordinator

Meeking - TE

I’m not expecting Hand to call plays. Not sure why he left Auburn either, but like I said Malzahn didn’t want to lose him and here we are.
I will admit that I don't know all the XO's for Oline play but was Warehime that bad? Oline had injuries all over and this was the first year with this scheme for the players. The bigger issue for me was the play calling.

personally i think injuries and lack of talent was a huge factor, then play calling especially in certain key moments wasn't that good. don't really know how good or bad Warehime is at this point.

i think the creativity on O was an D/D- grade, until the bowl game. Even with poor OL there are things coaches can do to create an advantage or mismatch. Other than a few plays(throw back to TE Brewer, WR reverse pass then pass to QB) we didn't do much. few of the things we did were not always executed well either(WR reverse to Burt and toss in end zone to Sam).
