A LOOK AT THE ROADRUNNERS—[SIZE=9pt]UTSA was swept in three games by No. 3 Texas Tech at home in San Antonio…the Roadrunners were shutout in games one and two and were bested, 10-6, inMonday[/SIZE] afternoon’s series finale.

A LOOK AT THE LONGHORNS—[SIZE=9pt]Texas is coming off a series loss on the road to then-No. 23 LSU…the Longhorns were defeated, 13-4, [/SIZE]on Friday night…on Saturday, Texas went up, 5-0, but eventually fell, 10-5…on Sunday, however, the Longhorns pounded out 13 hits and 11 runs en route to an 11-1 win over the Tigers…on the weekend, Texas hit .309 as a team with 10 extra-base hits…Zach Zubia launched two homers on Saturday and Kody Clemens hit his first of the year in the same game.

HENLEY HONORS—[SIZE=9pt]RHP Blair Henley was named Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Week following his six-inning effort at LSU…the sophomore went six frames, scattering six hits and three walks while striking out three and keeping the Tigers off the board…the honor is the first such award for Henley in his Longhorns career and the first conference honor for a Longhorn this season.[/SIZE]

ZUUUBIA—[SIZE=9pt]Redshirt-freshman Zach Zubia, who over the summer set a Northwoods League record with 22 home runs, showed off his power this past week…the Richmond, Texas, native, hit his first career triple [/SIZE]on Wednesday vs. Lamar before crushing two homers on Saturday…he became the first Longhorn to hit two homers in a game since Bret Boswell hit two on June 3, 2017, at Long Beach State…Zubia also added a bases-clearing double in Sunday’s game to add to the UT lead.

 

IT’S A SHAW THING—[SIZE=9pt]After going hitless over opening weekend, outfielder Tate Shaw has been on fire…the redshirt-junior had four multi-hit games last week and recorded an extra-base hit in each contest.[/SIZE]

 

TOP OF THE ORDER—[SIZE=9pt]The Longhorns’ one-through-three hitters—David Hamilton, Masen Hibbeler, and Kody Clemens, respectively—have hit a combined .346 (28-for-81) so far this season with 15 runs scored and nine RBI…they’ve also combined for 11 stolen bases on the year.[/SIZE]

 

LONG TIME, NO SEE—[SIZE=9pt]It’s been a while since Andy McGuire and Josh Sawyer stepped on the field for Texas…on Feb 18,  McGuire made his first appearance on the mound since May 17, 2015 and on Feb 23 at LSU, got his first at-bat since April 22, 2014…Sawyer’s Feb 18 appearnce on the hill was his first for Texas since April 30, 2016, a span of 659 days.[/SIZE]

 

THE KING—[SIZE=9pt]Nolan Kingham’s performance on Feb 16 vs. Louisiana earned him Perfect Game/Rawlings National Pitcher of the Week recognition…prior to the season, he was named a PG/Rawlings preseason All-America third team selection…he was also named to the Golden Spikes Award preseason watch list, and to the  NCBWA and Collegiate Baseball preseason All-America third teams.[/SIZE]

D1BASEBALL RANKINGS—[SIZE=9pt]In D1Baseball.com’s Top 100 College Prospects list, the Texas rotation was recognized…Kingham was highest at No. 47, followed by No. 76 Blair Henley, and No. 89 Chase Shugart…Matteo Bocchi, Kody Clemens, Michael McCann, Donny Diaz, and Ryan Reynolds made the “best of the rest” list…in D1’s position power rankings, several Horns made the cut: Clemens (3B, #24), Reynolds (1B, #26), David Hamilton (SS, #30), and Austin Todd (OF, #58).[/SIZE]

 

LAST SEASON—[SIZE=9pt]Texas came up a game short of an NCAA Super Regional appearance when it dropped a pair of games at Long Beach State in the NCAA Regional…the Longhorns dropped both games by one run after opening regional play with two wins…Texas lost its leading hitters, Kacy Clemens (.305) and Zane Gurwitz (.305) and starter Morgan Cooper (6-3, 2.32 ERA), but returns [/SIZE]Fridaynight starter Nolan Kingham (10-4, 2.84) and closer Beau Ridgeway (12 saves, 1.89)…SS David Hamilton and 1B Ryan Reynolds return to an infield that helped turn 65 double plays in 2017…the UT defense ranked fourth in the nation last year.

 

PRO BALLPARKS—[SIZE=9pt]Texas will once again head to Whataburger Field, home of the Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks, to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi this year (April 3[/SIZE])…the Longhorns also return to Constellation Field, home of the Sugar Land Skeeters, to take on Texas Southern on April 18.

YEAR TWO—[SIZE=9pt]February 17, 2017, marked David Pierce’s first game at the helm of the Texas Baseball program…Pierce was named head coach on June 29, 2016, when he became just the fifth Longhorn head coach since 1911 (with the exception of the war years of 1943-45 when Blair Cherry was at the helm) and the 13th head coach in 122 years of Texas baseball…Pierce—along with assistant coaches Sean Allen and Philip Miller and volunteer coach Phil Haig—came to Texas after two years at Tulane and three years at SHSU.[/SIZE]
