Mack vs Sark. Who is the better recruiter?

I've heard many say that Mack Brown is still the best recruiter UT has ever had. I think Sark has enough time here to compare him to Mack.

And I think Sark wins that battle of recruiting records.

Mack had some very good classes, but none were really wall to wall studs. There was always a lot of bread in the class along with the meat. Every class Mack had was at least half filled with "bread" recruits.

Somebody mentioned the correlation between a surgical procedure Mack had and his recruiting after that. He apparently didn't want to get on a plane after that. It changed him. Hence he zeroed in on Texas players and sacrificed a lot in doing that.

Sark, OTOH, has recruited 15-18 states and his classes are filled with high rated recruits.

Mack liked to have most of his class in the fold by April/June. Sark plays the long game and goes big game hunting.

What say you?

Different eras and rules so apples to apples is a bit tough. It was possible for Mack to dominant the state of Texas in recruiting and he did. Probably missed out on some possible studs from OOS in the process.

Sark can't own Texas like Mack did. It's just a different ball game these days. Sark is forced in a way to recruit nationally and has been killing it in doing so. I think he has been recruiting at a higher level than Mack did and I think if it continues we see Alabama dynasty level of talent on the 40 acres.

Mack had a lazy approach honestly. He did make the Texas offer seem coveted by not extending as many and would pressure kids to committ early. Sark will go to the wire to get a player he wants. I don’t really remember Mack doing that so much. Mack was loyal to Texas high school kids, and to me sometimes settled for lesser talent instead of seeking better out of state players. Sark wants the best regardless of where they are from. Just my thoughts. I know some will disagree and I’m ok with that. Both were good in their own right I just think sark is more determined as recruiter

Jason Barron. lol

Mack is the best in-state recruiter of Texas ever and maybe ever including any state. There is no doubt but also times were different. Sark is obviously a better national footprint recruiter than Mack and seems to be a much better evaluation of talent and fit to a system.

Eh, it appeared that way, but how many 5* kids left the state. Yes Texas would fill its class with 98% mostly Texas kids, but if Mack missed on his top target initially he just moved down the list to the next lower rated kid.

I just going to throw this out for discussion more so than who I believe is the better recruiter.

I think it depends on what the end goal is in Recruiting. Do you think getting the best players makes you the best recruiter or getting the players you need to win NC? NCs - Mack 1 - Sark 0.

Mack coached from 1998 to 2013, and won a natty in 2005. So neither coach won a national championship in there first 4 years at Texas.

If NCs are your only metric, then you will need to wait until Sark is done, before the comparison makes sense.

It took Mack seven years to get that natty. Sark has already been to the playoffs twice.

But back to recruiting. I think it's obvious that Sark does things that Mack simply couldn't. Recruit nationally. Mack's recruitment of Chris Simms was probably the last time he put effort into going outside the state. Otherwise, they had to fall in his lap for it to happen at all.

Sark recruits Texas just as well as Mack did, but doesn't resort to getting the 3rd or 4th best while watchinig the top recruits leave the state. Mack would pursue lesser recruits instead while Sark just looks beyond the borders to get an equivalent talent.

Mack Brown let Vince be Vince.
Sark hasn’t had a Vince yet

True, but that's development and not recruiting. I'm really interested in seeing what Sark does with Arch. I think that could be a good comparison.

That comment was in reference to the person that said Mack won a title and sark hasn’t. Mack quit trying to develop Vince and just let him play. Thats why they won that title. Nothing to do with recruiting

Right now for me it is tied. Mack did get lazy towards the end of his stay.

I don't know that he was lazy. A friend of mine pointed to a surgical procedure he had done and said he didn't want to travel much after that.

Mack's mind was on Texas. At that time, aggy had been dominant in Texas recruiting. Mack wanted to change that so thats what he went after. It would have helped him to be more aggressive out of state.
