LONGHORNS ADD A KICKER

Texas filled a big void by picking up Domingue.  Kickers don't get the "oohs and ahhs" as much as the other guys do, but Charlie Strong has to be resting a little easier after adding an experienced kicker to the team.

i saw st darrell win games he had no business winning because he always had first-rate kicking and a first-rate o-line.  this is a different era, but i bet the bottom line is still the kicking game and the o-line.  other elements can wax and wane, but you have to hold firm on those two.

phooey.  meant to comment on the fake fg for td at his previous stop.  dude has eye-swatter in his veins.  the disaster moment came early when he didn't field the toss cleanly.  no prob.  just jiggle it around until you find a handle.  many another would have gone into full panic mode (witness one ah-blong) and would have blown it for sure.

Huge, is he signed, sealed and delivered? The other LSU kicker was injured in the accident that claimed two lives in Wisconson.

Here's the press release from Texas on Domingue joining the team:

Domingue joins Texas Football as graduate transfer

Former LSU placekicker and 2015 Lou Groza Award semifinalist Trent Domingue has signed a financial aid agreement with the Longhorns.

Jul. 24, 2016 Football

Former LSU placekicker and 2015 Lou Groza Award (nation's top kicker) semifinalist Trent Domingue (doh-MAIN) has signed a financial aid agreement to join the Texas football program as a graduate transfer, Longhorns head coach Charlie Strong confirmed on Sunday.

"We're obviously thrilled that Trent decided to join our program," Strong said. "What a great addition in a critical position of need for us. Trent's an experienced and proven kicker who has had a great deal of success at the highest level and competed in pressure situations. He'll be a strong leader on our special teams, and we look forward to getting him on campus."

Domingue, who received his degree in general business from LSU in spring 2016 and is a member of the 2016 Groza Award preseason watch list, took over as LSU's primary placekicker with two games remaining in the 2014 season. He was 2-of-4 that year, prior to going 13-of-17 in 2015, including a streak of 10 consecutive made attempts. He also put together a streak of 42 consecutive made extra points, which was the eighth longest in LSU history, prior to one being blocked. He finished the season 49-of-50 in PATs and has made 55-of-56 in his career.

"I've always known that Texas has been a pretty storied program, both academically and athletically," Domingue said. "I knew coach Brick (Haley) from LSU, and he's a big reason why I had interest in Texas initially. I'm really excited to get there and start training and getting to know everyone. Coach Strong is great and seems like a players coach. I think it will be an awesome time playing for him."

A former walk-on with the Tigers, Domingue handled a majority of the kickoff duties in 2014 with 51 attempts for an average of 62.2 yards per kick and 28 touchbacks. Once becoming the placekicker for 2015, he split those duties and kicked off 32 times for an average of 58.4 ypk with seven touchbacks.

"My mom went to the University of Texas in Arlington so she has a little background with Texas, but I definitely like the grad program there," Domingue said. "I'll be in advertising, so it will be good to finish and have that for later on in life.

"I want to thank LSU for giving me the last four years, some of the best of my life. Unfortunately it didn't work out, but that's life. I've just got to keep going, and I've found a great home, so I'm excited."

A prep soccer standout who did not start playing football until his junior year in high school, the Mandeville, La. native developed into a first-team 5A all-state selection as a senior at St. Paul's High School and twice earned all-district honors. He was also chosen all-district as a punter as a senior.

This is great news. The difference between have a bad FG kicker and good one could be the difference in two or three games. I'm surprised that we were able to get a proven college kicker.

This has been one of the best off seasons I can remember in quite a while.

1. The Gilbert hire.

2. A top ten recruiting class.

3. Buechle

4. A gift of another impact WR and two OL that will probably contribute this year from Baylor.

5. A proven college kicker.

interesting how this is being received over on the tiger drippings board.  not much gnashing of teeth or rending of flesh, but some are clearly ticked at the hatter for getting them into this situation.

speculation from some is that the hatter probably promised four years on their tab to the young guy and had to go through with it or let him play qb, his other promise.  or something like that.  i may have that wrong a bit.  anyway, the thought is that situations dictated that trent return to walk-on status even though he was their returning kicker.  bizz-harr that.

basic take is that they don't like trent finishing up elsewhere but don't see him as someone they can't replace.  he's seen as pretty automatic from something like 45 in but not the long leg to win the barn-burner.  i suspect that several posters there are brave-facing a bit and annoyance isn't far from the flow point, but they are going to be plenty ok.

i swear.  i can't remember a year like this.  just this instance of nabbing a starting kicker in his prime from a leading program just as we seemed to be getting desperate is unheard of.  i'm pretty sure that jerk charlie strong knew well what he was getting during those taut sessions where he bemoaned our not having a kicker this season.  damn him.  (hey, i said i swear.)

Texas adds LSU transfer Trent Domingue

this post is interesting due to one reply at bottom of first page and general lack of response from tiger fans.  not surprising since their returning kicker transferred out, but mildly notable all the same:

How good is your returning FG kicker?

me, i expect we end up in the title game against lsu and those peckerheads come up with some last-minute wording from the ncaa that never existed before that says no graduate transfer can kick against his former team in the natty game.  so he has to kick for lsu in a longhorn uniform.

an lsu blocking back gets confused on the final play of the game where a short 3-pointer that would give them the game gets stuffed by his taking out trent's knees, ending the season for him.

only something like that would be a fitting end to this wild story.

This is Huge -- may very well mean the difference in 1-2 games . Why don't coaches put more emphasis in recruiting kickers ???

Quite the story

"AUSTIN — On an otherwise unremarkable afternoon last April, Charlie Strong made one of his most important recruiting pitches of the year, and he didn’t even realize it

.

But 650 miles away, a doctoral student named Emily Chastain soon would.

At the time, Strong thought he merely was moaning to a small group of media members, and how could they help him, anyway? It was too late to sign a new place-kicker for the fall, so he figured he was stuck with the inexperienced, inconsistent guys he’d been watching shank one field-goal attempt after another in practice.

When one writer asked if it was possible to find someone else, Strong bristled.

“Do you want me to generate one from somewhere?†he asked, rhetorically. “If you find a kicker, send him to me.†

Those were the words the reporters typed into their laptops and posted on the Internet, and those were the words Chastain eventually found when she decided to do a Google search on behalf of her fiancé.

Chastain, an Ole Miss graduate studying audiology at South Alabama, just happened to be engaged to Trent Domingue, the kicker at LSU. And in July, Domingue was becoming increasingly nervous about his status with the Tigers.

The season before, LSU coach Les Miles upgraded Domingue from walk-on status and awarded him a scholarship, but it was only good for a year. This summer, Domingue said, Miles couldn’t guarantee his scholarship would be renewed.

Because he already had his undergraduate degree in hand, Domingue was free to transfer to any Division I school he chose, with immediate eligibility. That’s where Chastain came in.

She found Strong’s comments about needing a kicker, and mentioned them to Domingue, who had fond memories of a spring break trip he’d once taken to Austin with friends who had a nearby lake house.

He reached out to Strong, and pretty quickly, it all made too much sense. He liked the city, he liked UT’s graduate advertising program, he had a chance to win a starting job, and he had a scholarship offer....."
