Let's talk about some of the guys already committed

So I'm up doing some last minute prep work for tomorrow, but because I suffer from ADHD and can get sucked into something completely different I started watching film on some guys who have been committed for a while.  I like to go back and see if there is any growth from junior to senior film, and if I notice anything different the second time around.  I thought I'd share these things with you guys to keep you updated on what I'm thinking with certain players.

Tristian Houston - RB - Galena Park North Shore

I want a re-do on what I said about Houston.  For some reason when I viewed his film last season I was pretty "meh" on his skills and saw him as a guy who would fit into the committee.  Tonight I re-watched some film and saw a guy with great one cut skills and while his speed still isn't plus, it's better than adequate.  Houston showed a lot of growth from junior to senior year, and while Texas is stacking a lot of players at the running back position I don't see him taking a backseat to any of them.  He reminds me of Vondrell McGee in the way he plays and he runs behind his pads incredibly well.  He's also been a vocal recruiter on twitter.

Kirk Johnson - RB - Valley Christian High School (San Jose, CA)

I was a tad more bullish on Johnson than I was on Houston when I first saw film, but I still evaluated the Longhorn legacy as a nice back but not a star.  His senior film changed my opinion.  I've seen a lot of talk about moving Johnson to defense, but I think this kid could be an emerging star.  I know it seems like lofty praise, but when I watch his film I see a lot of Marshawn Lynch in him.  Now I've always been a huge fan of Lynch going back to his days at Cal and followed him when he was drafted by my favorite professional team in Buffalo.  Marshawn and Kirk both run behind their pads very well and show tremendous lean and balance with an ability to get small at the point of contact.  Kirk's brother Collin is a monster and will be the stud of the class next season, but Kirk has proven to be a very good player and grew a lot from last year.  All in all I think this running back class is something to be excited for, especially if they can close with one or both of Warren or Soso.

Matthew Merrick - QB - Cistercian

Stop me if I'm serving too much kool-aid, but the more I watch this kid the more I think Shawn Watson got an absolute steal.  Merrick has a ton of inexperience and doesn't play great competition, but the tools are there to mold him into a future college signal caller.  Merrick comes into the perfect situation with no pressure and lower expectations.  His work with Kevin Murray is really paying off  and he should be able to continue working with him throughout next year before he enrolls a year a from now.  The workout video linked above shows how he does all of the little things really well, and alleviates some concern I had about the inconsistent mechanics and footwork I saw on his game film.  You have to remember that this kid is very new to the game and is only scratching the surface on what he can really do.  He's only going to get better with coaching, and from that point his development will hinge on his understanding of the mental game and his ability to process things on the field.  Now that is still a huge step to take, but I believe Merrick could turn into more than just a backup option in the next few years.  I love his arm talent and the ball really jumps out of his hand.

Johnson runs a lot like Warren from the film I watched.  Both have good feet and make quick cuts in the hole. Johnson may be the biggest surprise of this class IMO.  Merrick may surprise as well.  Reminds me of a fellow named McCoy at the same stage.  If he develops like Colt did he could be something special.

Is Merrick stil in the 180 lb range or has he put on some weight?

Solid post, Mike.

Most people are understandably focused on new guys or the "top" of the class. To me, the real strength of this class is it's depth. Some of the names that no one is talking about have a legit shot at being the best players in the class.

Good stuff.

I like Merrick.  I even watched some basketball film on him.  He is a talented kid that I beleive will put in the work to get better.

I have a name in mind but would be interested in who you're thinking. I named who I think the undervalued recruit we have is in a thread about two weeks ago.

I think both Vahe and McNeal have a legitimate shot at making serious contributions. It wouldn't surprise me at all if either is thought of as the best player in this class 5 years from now.

Agree on both of those. I think Buck Major could end up being an AA for us.

The depth is the absolute best thing about it.  I was going through the class today and they legitimately filled almost every positional need with quality depth.  The only thing they could have done a little better at was d-line.

Quarterback - Locksley is your potential star development guy, Merrick could be a lottery ticket.

Running Back - Two quality guys in Houston and Johnson with maybe one or two more on the way

Wide Receiver - McNeal is a stud as far as I'm concerned, Johnson is a high upside guy, Burt is your established high ranking guy with one or two guys still left on the board

O-line - Vahe and Connor Williams look like two potential maulers, if Major makes it in he's got great tools

D-Line - Lampkin fills a need at DT but they could use more depth.  Mack would make it a complete class.  Vasser and Omenihu are good strong end candidates, void at weak end

Linebacker/DB - Two of the most star studded groups I can remember Texas landing at these positions.  Options everywhere

On Kirk Johnson, the older folks here may remember that his dad was a terrific RB as a freshman, averaging about 8 YPC, but got moved to defense because of another kid named Earl. I fully expect both Kirk and his brother to not just be college stars somewhere on the field, but to be high draft picks, with long NFL careers. I do have to be honest - I have been wrong before.

I've no great details to post, and other key treads are winding down, but want to pay tribute to a kid with a lotta heart who started something before January, and he's gonna be special. Talking about Cecil Cherry.

Me and my aunt and dad and uncle and lil sis you'll can tell who my dad is lol I love my mama and daddy

THIS is what Charlie Strong is attracting to the program. There's a lot more going on than x's and o's that makes it all work. Really great individuals are gonna wind their way here, and those who don't fit the vibrations will be pulled and pushed elsewhere. And alot of momma's are gonna regret they sons did not make their way here. Cecil is The True 💯 🂠 ♥

You say Merrick has a ton of experience, but his competition wasn't much.

I remember a QB we once had that went to a 2A school.  He had a ton of experience and his competition wasn't much either.  :)

Everyone will be on Malik's bandwagon - and for good reason

But it wouldn't surprise me if Wheeler didn't wind up being the star of the LB recruits.

Doc, I wrote in his commitment piece that I thought Wheeler was every bit the player Malik was.
