Lampkin decision day

— Twitter API (@twitterapi) November 7, 2011

At 6'3 and 291 pounds, Lampkin has ideal size for the position and isn't far from a weight where he could contribute as a nose tackle if the coaches feel he doesn't have enough gap-penetrating ability to play there. Additionally, he also has the strength to hold up at the point of attack to make such a move feasible.

Heading into his senior season, his athleticism may be a bit underrated by 247Sports, which rates him four out of 10 in that category. While his quickness off the ball is hardly equal to that possessed by Mack, he does show decent get-off, lateral quickness, and can make plays against the wide receiver screen game.

Since Lampkin spent a lot of time last season playing defensive end for Cy Falls, so he may have a bit of an adjustment in college as he moves inside full time and will also need to work on a signature pass-rushing move if he is going to be a disruptive player, as well as work on his punch to hit and separate.

When he does bring his hands and gets extension, he can be difficult for opponents to deal with him.

We really need a universal tweeter translator.  Nothing personal meant, Juan, you do a great job with your posts, but I really do not like even trying to read tweeter crap.  If people who post this crap cannot figure out a way to translate the appropriate content to a format that somewhat represents English, then, well you have lost me, and if this forum does not address this issue, then, it too. will have lost me.

To begin with, it would be nice to know "who" is talking, then, "who are they speaking for",  then, "what the hell they are saying!"  Maybe we need to have introductory lessons ... no, wait!  I do not give a shit!

I would imagine that everybody is going to have a great laugh about this post, but I gotta tell ya that I am very serious.  In a few years, the tweeter verse as we know it will have ceased to exist, and hopefully people will have resorted to some form of communication that will resemble some language that we all, more or less, understand.

Yes, I picked those comments out of a conversational stream between Ian, Eric and a couple of other folks.  It can be a little tough to follow this way, but there is some insight there.  I think you are making much too much of it.

OK, for starters, we all recognize they are discussing Lampkin, hopefully.

Once a kid commits, don't the first questions quickly become ....

--  what is his role?

--  what will his best position be?

--  what is his upside?

--  are there any good comps for him?

Are these not the natural questions for the type of people who follow college recruiting?

OK, so ......

Eric asks what others see in Lampkin.  "I see a big athletic dude that will both hold gaps and make plays."

Ian responds "Yep. Bammer-type, 3-4 DL.

So this is football talk. To grasp the meaning you must already have some working knowledge of football defenses. Here, they are talking about scheme (the 3-4) and position (the DL, or defensive line).  To follow along, you will have to already know what a "gap" is.  And you will probably have to recognize "Bammer" refers to DLs in Saban's style of the 3-4 (not all 3-4s are alike).  If you have the background knowledge then this made sense, despite the less than perfect presentation.

Then they expand alittle on this topic..

Eric - "Lampkin in an under look is going to free up the 3-tech and also help keep linebackers clean. He'll make others better."

Ian -- "Yep. Can't play either the Under or an odd front without a powerful, team-first servant manning the nose."

This kicked the football talk up slightly.  To follow, the reader must know the role of a DT/NT in the 3-4, what a 3-tech is and how different versions of the 3-4 work.  If you do, then this made sense.  If not, then no big deal.  But, try and keep this in mind - twitter has a strict character limit.  A premium is placed on brevity - being able to say the most with the fewest words is a skill.  Here, they did that.  Which is why I took the time to pull out these quotes from twitter and post them here.

Lastly, Kheeston Randle was used as a comp who others would recognize.  It was also pointed out that while Lampkin is already nearly 300 lbs., he is at that weight never having had the benefit of college-level professional trainers, dieticians and related staff.

If you can recall, above I used another twitter quote that some all that up with even less words - "Flat-belly, big booty."  Isn't that perfect?  This best twitter people can spin phrases like that - saying the most with the fewest words.   Frankly, this should all have been self-explanatory.

I admit this style is not perfect, but my guess is that posters here who already understood the terminology understood what was being communicated in these handful of tweets.  And, if so, I trust they found these guys' comments insightful (which is why I posted them).  You did not.  From my perspective, the fault for this lies neither with twitter nor me.  Rather with your unfamiliarity with the terminology being used.

You seem to be suggesting that, since you cannot understand twitterspeak, then no one should use it here.  That seems pretty intolerant.  Wouldn't it be better in the future, for you just to quickly skim past these type of posts when you come to them?  This way, they won't bother you anymore, I wont have to do any "twitter-translating" and the other readers who do get something from it can still enjoy that benefit?   Everyone wins.

I frankly love your twitter posts. I dont know how you keep up with all the tweets from recruits, commits, coaches, bloggers etc but I dont have time or the follower space to follow them all currently. I like reading tweets and thats where most news seems to break these days. Keep up the good work!

ADHD

I also enjoy all the twitter you put out there. There are things I don't understand though. Example what is fify and now you used ADHD. What do these mean? Sorry for my twitter ignorance. I just learned nsfw stands for not suitable for work.

No, Juan, I think people should post whatever they want.  I am just ranting.  Actually, I really do appreciate the effort that you put into your posts.  Actually your explanation is so good that I think you should be hired as forum translator.  In all honesty, I understand everything that is being said as you describe it, IF, I choose to pay attention, which, most of the time I choose not to.  To me, it comes down to an issue of style of communication.  Of course no one is accusing twitter or forums in general of impersonating venues of journalism, but journalistic style dictates that one attempts to communicate effectively with as many people as possible.  So, in effect, my comments were aimed at the state of communications in general

The twitterverse by its very nature eliminates any semblance of nuance.  Taking the string of messages that you describe above.  The fact that twitter handles are usually so obscure, renders the entire content effectively unreadable, unless one chooses to delve into into who is who.  A lot of the posters here are older.  They may appreciate the reduced nuance of the twitterverse and if they do not, they may choose to just ignore it.  For me, it is just a matter of inconvenience.  I am amazed at how upset folks get about things that they have no control over or are not really very important in the larger scheme of things.  I do not expect that you follow my posts in any form or fashion.  But, if you did, you would find that I only get really riled up about issues that I determine to be very important.  The twitterverse is NOT one of these issues as far as I am concerned.

Usually, I take the time to craft my posts so that it is clear where I am coming from.  Looking back and reading my last post on this thread, apparently, I did not take such care.  For that, If I offended you, I apologize.  I really do appreciate the effort that you go to in providing content on this forum.  If I could sum up my feelings that instigated that post, it would be that I had an irritated reaction that said, "How could anybody who cares so much about providing content for all of us, care so little about putting it in a context where it can be meaningful to all of us?"  If I had said that, It probably would not have been very well received either, and would have done nothing to further any understanding of how much I appreciate how much you put into your efforts here.

My reaction to that string of tweets, was no more or less than the response that I predictably have when the TV is on and a reality show starts up.  I might say to my wife, or the dogs, "Why would anybody care one whit about this!" , before I changed the station or turned it off.  That is all that what I said meant to me. I did not give it any more thought until I saw your post today.  My mistake was that I did not filter what I posted, like I usually do.

So, in this case, Mea culpa!  But really!  I blame it on the heat of almost August! ;)
