Here is what I got. Reply
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just finished a lunch meeting (business not football) at the UT golf club (Mack Brown is the Chairman of the board of the club). Met with someone close to the situation so after talking business I asked him what was going on. Here is the deal like it or not:
1. They will not fire Brown but he has been interested in leaving since their last appearance in the BCSNC against Bama. If he beats Bama, he retires and goes out on top. That is why Muschamp was named "head coach in waiting", and he left because he saw Brown was going to stick around til went out on top. Ego and legacy etc. People here have a ton of respect for what Brown has done for UT especially off the field and do not want to see his image slandered but think it is time for him to step down.
2. The bigger issue besides football is the sexual misconduct in the athletic dept. at UT. The AD and agreed to step down to keep the NCAA off their backs and Brown would leave too if his staying harmed the situation. That is the biggest motivator for him to go but his ego wants to go out on top not on the slide, The reason he kept saying " we will win the Big 12 after the first couple of losses is because that would be something he would feel was good enough to leave on considering the last few years of poor performance, plus the NCAA sexual misconduct case at UT.
3. The agents of the school and Sexton have outlined the offer IF Brown steps down but "Officially" Saban has not spoke to UT and UT has not spoke to Saban ( standard procedure here). So UT coming out today to debunk their contact with Saban it technically "true" but very misleading.
4. Sexton says that Saban would leave Bama but the deal has to be right and is definitely playing both sides. He is fed up with many aspects of Bama but obviously will deal with it for the $$. They have agreed in principle to the terms both side would agree to. Sexton also said Bama would fight hard to keep Saban (negotiation tactic but probably true also). Also said Terri Saban is very influential here and that she is fed up over the expectations at Bama and lack of appreciation for the work he has done there. i.e. Blue Blood mentality for being Bama.
5. He said that it can easily go either way but it will come down to when the rubber hits the road after this weekends final results. UT prides itself as the Harvard of public schools and focused big time on academics and they fear a backlash from professors for paying a coach too much and an over focus on sports so they have the $$ but also have limits. Bama will up the ante and try to keep him.
That is the most realistic scenario I have heard and seems to include what all of the rumors are out there. They are all partially true. The truth is it is not 100% he is staying at Bama or going to UT bc its too early to tell.
Last tidbit. Brown really does not want Saban to succeed him (ego) but is worried that the new AD will not protect him like the last one.
