Here is what I got. Reply

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just finished a lunch meeting (business not football) at the UT golf club (Mack Brown is the Chairman of the board of the club). Met with someone close to the situation so after talking business I asked him what was going on. Here is the deal like it or not:

1. They will not fire Brown but he has been interested in leaving since their last appearance in the BCSNC against Bama. If he beats Bama, he retires and goes out on top. That is why Muschamp was named "head coach in waiting", and he left because he saw Brown was going to stick around til went out on top. Ego and legacy etc. People here have a ton of respect for what Brown has done for UT especially off the field and do not want to see his image slandered but think it is time for him to step down.

2. The bigger issue besides football is the sexual misconduct in the athletic dept. at UT. The AD and agreed to step down to keep the NCAA off their backs and Brown would leave too if his staying harmed the situation. That is the biggest motivator for him to go but his ego wants to go out on top not on the slide, The reason he kept saying " we will win the Big 12 after the first couple of losses is because that would be something he would feel was good enough to leave on considering the last few years of poor performance, plus the NCAA sexual misconduct case at UT.

3. The agents of the school and Sexton have outlined the offer IF Brown steps down but "Officially" Saban has not spoke to UT and UT has not spoke to Saban ( standard procedure here). So UT coming out today to debunk their contact with Saban it technically "true" but very misleading.

4. Sexton says that Saban would leave Bama but the deal has to be right and is definitely playing both sides. He is fed up with many aspects of Bama but obviously will deal with it for the $$. They have agreed in principle to the terms both side would agree to. Sexton also said Bama would fight hard to keep Saban (negotiation tactic but probably true also). Also said Terri Saban is very influential here and that she is fed up over the expectations at Bama and lack of appreciation for the work he has done there. i.e. Blue Blood mentality for being Bama.

5. He said that it can easily go either way but it will come down to when the rubber hits the road after this weekends final results. UT prides itself as the Harvard of public schools and focused big time on academics and they fear a backlash from professors for paying a coach too much and an over focus on sports so they have the $$ but also have limits. Bama will up the ante and try to keep him.

That is the most realistic scenario I have heard and seems to include what all of the rumors are out there. They are all partially true. The truth is it is not 100% he is staying at Bama or going to UT bc its too early to tell.

Last tidbit. Brown really does not want Saban to succeed him (ego) but is worried that the new AD will not protect him like the last one.

Couple of things:

Like I said, this is from an LSU board. Not any of the Texas sites. So this isn't exactly someone who is partial to either side. I think a lot of them want Saban to leave, but aren't bothered either way.

I found a lot of information to go right along with what a lot of "insiders" are saying on the random boards. Seems pretty consistent.

I don't think anything has been decided yet.

Discuss.

Probably from Tiger Droppings (best LSU board out there IMO). Hard to disagree with any of the points.

Now this I CAN believe! Hope it works out for everyone and the result ends up being Mack moves on and Nick comes to replace him.

Thanks for sharing. Very interesting conversation and I think it brings to light some issues that have not been mentioned before. I do find it odd that it was on an LSU board.

So if we get stomped by BU, Mack will not resign because he isn't going out "on top?"

Does that mean he would be fired or that he would be back?

If UT wins, and then goes to a BCS bowl and win, are you saying Mack would retire by going out on top?

I get that Mack wants to hang on and I get that we have a fluid and unstable situation.

I also believe that if we win tomorrow it makes it more likely, not less likely that Mack stays or tries to stay.

If we get donkey stomped, it will be clear to everyone, maybe even Mack that it's time to go

4. Sexton says that Saban would leave Bama but the deal has to be right and is definitely playing both sides.

This I believe is the most important item that's going on now. Sexton and Saban are good at it.

probably just pieced together info from our boards, but he is mostly right...

... that is where this is right now.

Oh, and Bill Powers will need to get the approval of the Big Pants in this process right now: Hicks

It's not just a BMD thing, it's a BOR thing; and Hicks has the most power in this process, if he shall choose to use it.

Ask yourself: What does Mr. Hicks want to do?

He'll be back in 2014. He will go after DKRs record. The program is being set back badly. Thats what I take from that.

Damn shame.

It's easy for them to make the story fit reading all the rumors here. Hell, I could write a pretty good story about a source and have it tie in to what's being rumored. The only talk is on UT boards and rivals of the schools involved (they certainly aren't credible)

Uhh, there is no "NCAA sexual misconduct case."

I assume he's talking about Kearney. But that has nothing to do with the NCAA and only tangentially about sexual misconduct.

The rest I pretty much agree with.

There is a lot that is accurate here, and I agree with Mr. Cossell. However, there are a few critical factors that are not included here that McPhaul has alluded to in several Crossfires. The balance of all factors would tend to favor Texas on the money aspect as well as the family aspect. The critical piece as of right now is that we do not have an open coaching position. Once that occurs, the game really begins. However, I still place my bet on Texas and nothing has changed.

Thanks for posting. After everything we've been hearing the past few days, all of this makes sense.

Really hope Saban is our coach next year, but more importantly, we need to get rid of Mack.

Man, I can't wait for all of this to be done with..

Thanks for the info Longview! I completely get the whole playing both sides deal and seeing which school wants it most. By now, he should have an understanding of what each can offer. I want to know what is it that will be the de-facto item to tip the cap one way or the other.

Excellent post, well laid out. Everything you said lines up with what I've heard, except the sexual misconduct stuff and it's significance is new to me. Thanks for the report!
