Hey, we always have a chance until he says otherwise. There are some promising things in the article.

On Tuesday, Jefferson told the American-Statesman that he has trimmed his list to three schools and that he would announce them over the next three days by his outfits. His Tuesday ensemble, consisting of a burnt orange Texas pullover and matching shoes, was a promising sign for the Longhorns.

I'm liking that he wore the Longhorn gear today instead of Wednesday or Thursday.  Can't explain why; I just have

a good feel about it.

Here is my take on Jefferson. I dont want this to sound negative because he sounds like a great kid with a very supportive family.  However, after reading some of his comments such as wanting to know by tomorrow who the DC will be at A&M seems like he is a little to self absorbed with himself.  There is no doubt he is a great talent but he reminds me of that kid that is head and shoulders above everyone else and has never had to develop that mental toughness because he wins out on talent alone.  Its great to have talent and everyone will have it on the next level but the ones that develop the mental toughness usually win out and prove to be successful.  I believe to play for Strong you better have mental toughness or learn to develop it.  If not, you won't last long.

I am more excited about the Cherry kid than Jefferson. Cherry is what I would call a "dirt baller".  He gets it and I believe he will thrive with this coaching staff.  Cherry makes me think of Kasey Studdard when it comes to mental toughness and attitude.  Don't get me wrong, I would rather take my chances with 5* athletes like Jefferson.  Kids like him tend to bring other recruits with them and only time will tell how they turn out.

@swaha I get what you are saying, but at this same time I always look at it as 17/18 year olds trying to make huge decisions at a young age. It is really easy to over think it.

I understand what you're saying, but disagree by looking at it from his perspective.

This is a crucial decision. Does he want people laughing at the defense he plays on? He will spend the next four years of his life under the new DC (theoretically speaking) so if I were him I'd want to know who it is – otherwise, I'm taking an uneducated risk.

Why would the most coveted LB in America want to go to a school that hasn't shown much interest in defense in the past, and doesn't seem real interested in getting a top DC?

I might not give a deadline to Sumlin, but I'd sure have one penciled down in my head.

I agree that I would want to know who was going to shape my future but again does it really matter who is the DC at A&M.  Sumlin has never had a good defense regardless of where he has coached.  You would think that Jefferson would see the facts that have been presented to him and his family comparing Sumlin and Strong.  That is why I brought up the mental toughness in regards to football.  I know his first priority is to get a great education but if he has aspirations to be an elite player beyond college, then it is not being with Sumlin at A&M.  I can just picture him at Texas and getting a good dose of humble pie from Strong.  In the end, I hope he commits to Texas Friday just to see Texags implode.

Only selling point for aggie is immediate playing time on that crappy defense.

I'm surprised it's taking ol' Sumblin this long to hire a DC. Can't blame the kid for wanting to know how he fits into a defense's plans and scheme. Be fun if we sign Malik, especially if he brings other highly regarded players with him; McNeal, Mack, etc.

@HornEsch, Thanks. Longtime lurker. @JB TexasEx, I have seen Mack play in person and he can completely dominate a game when he so desires.  He is like alot of other D1 recruits on the high school level.  When he wants to beat you he will, but he tends to get lazy and take plays off.  I saw a freshman run around him to block a punt one Friday night. However, I would love for Strong to get this guy.  He has a very bright future.

SHA, I think the bigger question is, 'Can Sumlin get a good defensive coordinator?"  If you were a good defensive coordinator, would you take the job?  I wouldn't, unless I really needed the job.  Conversely, if I were a good defensive coordinator, I wouldn't need the job.

That's the rub.
