Good Malik article, still hope!

When an athlete has to clarify a statement that was made, fans should always assume that the journalist owns at least 50% of the problem.
I don't see where the word demanded was used.  Maybe I missed it.  I read that he wanted to know who the DC would be.  I don't necessarily see the journalist as being part of the problem because it looks like he reported what was told to him.  I think after Jefferson read his comments in print, he had a "ohoh" moment.  I pretty sure he didn't want people to get the perception that he was demanding an answer. At least I didn't.

Another typical "up swing" in the UT MJ hopes.  I still have my doubts he is even considering UT.  I think his mind was made up a long time ago.   I would love to get this kid but my hopes of it abandoned this roller coaster.

He must have one hell of a relationship with twinkie coach though.  As Charlie often says "Just when you look at it" .....

the ags have:

  • No defense
  • No DC
  • Lost their RC to Kansas
  • No history of developing players under Twinkie boy.

the horns have:

  • A defensive guru, former LB in Strong
  • A great DC in Bedford
  • A great history of Strong developing NFL players.
  • A head coach who emphasizes LB and DL
  • and most of all AUSTIN

I think the surprise should be if he was to pick the ags.  So this recruitment of MJ is baffling anyways.

Yeah, I too think his mind was made up a long time ago... just a lot of recent smoke and drama.  I am not holding my breath, if we get him - great!

I'm not holding my breath on this ... If he picks UT, great.

Rumors flying that Sumlin is bringing in Durkin AND Mattison as co-DCs, so instead of having no DC, looks like they will have two of them.

Sumlin has absolutely shit the bed defensively with one DC, might as well try and bring in two.

FWIW - Strong was Asst HC / Co-DC with Mattison while they were at Florida together 2005-2007.

Abandon all hope.  Malik was just looking for an 'excuse', and this will be plenty.

Sumlin would have to juggle responsibilities on his staff to make room for an extra guy on the defensive side, but he may believe his offense is solid enough to make a major push on D and not bring in someone to replace Beaty.

Interesting.  I have never been a huge fan of CO-coordinators.  Maybe its just my perception but seems to cause confusion and inconsistency.

Seeing Wickline get upset after losses and bolting to the locker room before the postgame EOT, had me wondering if it was the play calling by Watson or disagreements with Watson OR the play of the OL.

Charlie has mentioned it was a competitive thing so its probably the OL play.

Not bashing Wickline at all.  Hes a proven OL coach which has developed raw talent at OSU.

As for MJ, he has had every excuse possible to make the move to the horns.  Since he hasnt already picked the horns, most other recruits would have, my bet is hes going ag.  Bad descision to put faith in sumlin but oh well

Malik Jefferson may in fact choose the Aggies, but there has been a number of "absolutes" on this board and other internet recruiting websites that haven't panned out.  With that said, until I see Malik place a flower on top of a grave with a dog in it, I choose to believe that UT has done enough to gain his committment.

Here is my take on Jefferson. I dont want this to sound negative because he sounds like a great kid with a very supportive family.  However, after reading some of his comments such as wanting to know by tomorrow who the DC will be at A&M seems like he is a little to self absorbed with himself.  There is no doubt he is a great talent but he reminds me of that kid that is head and shoulders above everyone else and has never had to develop that mental toughness because he wins out on talent alone.  Its great to have talent and everyone will have it on the next level but the ones that develop the mental toughness usually win out and prove to be successful.  I believe to play for Strong you better have mental toughness or learn to develop it.  If not, you won't last long.

I am more excited about the Cherry kid than Jefferson. Cherry is what I would call a "dirt baller".  He gets it and I believe he will thrive with this coaching staff.  Cherry makes me think of Kasey Studdard when it comes to mental toughness and attitude.  Don't get me wrong, I would rather take my chances with 5* athletes like Jefferson.  Kids like him tend to bring other recruits with them and only time will tell how they turn out.
.

Agree with you on Cherry, I grew up in the 60's when the NFL had great physical middle linebackers such as Butkus, Lambert, etc. He is going to bring more toughness to this team. Coach Bedford has said win or lose teams are not going to enjoy playing Texas.  It was also refreshing how excited he was to join Texas and talking about National Championships.

Also, agree with on MJ being self absorbed. I felt that way when I read about him complaining that Coach Strong wasn't given him enough personal attention compared to Sumlin. I know some posters think the jersey wearing to school is just having fun in recruiting, I see it as he needs more personal attention like he's not getting enough.

It's interesting one LB recruit sees Texas as being a future dynasty and winning NC. While the other LB looks like he rather commit to a coach who has never done anything on the defensive side of the football.

The more I see and hear about MJ, the less I care about his commitment.  Looks more & more like an attention-whoring, primma donna.

I'm more concerned about OL and DL recruits, anyway.

I can guess you just love Daylon Mack then. THAT kid makes Jefferson seem quiet and shy.

No, I don't "love" any recruits until after they sign with UT.

Geez...with fawning articles like Wescott's it's no wonder these kids lose touch with reality.

...linebacker Malik Jefferson will change the trajectory of a college program when he makes his commitment days ahead of enrolling early at the school of his choice.

He's only an attention-whoring primma donna if he chooses the aggies on Friday. If he chooses the Horns then he was just having fun during the recruiting process. :D

Maybe I was a little too harsh.

It really isn't the kid's fault he's getting so much attention.  He's got CFB coaches, reporters, and "recruiting gurus" in his face 24/7.  Tough to keep perspective when everybody's kissing your ring.

He's a very good player.  I just don't think he's the "savior" portrayed by Wescott and his ilk.
