*****GAME DAY THREAD: Orange-White Scrimmage*****

Just watched the game.  I think Murphy ought to be inserted into more of the "who's the next Longhorn QB" discussions.

While I'm at it, if I had a complaint about Sark (which I really don't) it would be his handling of the quarterback position, of all things.  I have to say, for him to say Ewers is "clearly the starter" after the Spring Game, is baffling to me.  I guess my follow up question is "why?"  Should he automatically get the nod because of last year's stellar play?  Certainly not.... Was he head and shoulders above Murphy in the Spring / Spring Game?  Certainly not...

Again, I am not trying to start anything against Sark here... I'm all about what he's doing at UT.... but this is a discussion forum, and his handling of the QBs - all three years, I don't get.

Murphy certainly has a strong arm as Sark said, but there's much more to playing QB such as reading defenses, etc, which Sark would have evidence of.

Two of the QBs have never started a game in college (one was basically hurt his whole first year) while the other has played in 10 games and showed flashes of potentIal.   If there was an experienced QB behind Ewers that played like Murphy in the spring game then maybe the job would be open but Ewers is the guy.  The team needs to know it so we can get ready.

We have a lot of opportunity next season and can’t mess it up with a green QB.

Sark can be stubborn to say the least, but his handling of QB's isn't the question for me (other than the Okie St game). There needs to be a plan in place to manage players and their trajectories. For instance, the hope is for Ewers to dominate this next season and go pro. Leaving an open competition between MM and Manning which Malik wins. He then proceeds to tear it up continuing the "Sark is a QB guru" mantra and enters the NFL draft. Rinse and repeat (Manning and all future QB recruits). Anyway I just think there needs to be a cycle that hopefully levels out at two years for each starter after a redshirt. Otherwise I think the portal hurts us. Case in point, Gerry Hamilton mentioned that MM's performance garnered some attention and others said that Florida coaches had started following him. If Malik knows the plan is for him to start next year maybe he stays. JMO, rant ended.

Agree, MM definitely showed he has the stuff to be a starting QB and that he will likely be the back up.

There is a lot of Spring that we don't know about regarding the QB battle. I don't think any of the inside reporting ever mentioned Ewers struggling or Malik really pushing to take the job.

Well said.... should I have read this as a rant?

I agree... do you think Ewers showed that he does this well last season?

I do see your point.  I would completely agree with you if Ewers played well last year.  Flashes of potential - yes.  But there were flashes of unpleasantness as well.

He has potential and I hope he maximizes it... but I don't think his play in 2022 warrants an automatic starting nod in 2023.  My opinion from the recliner.

Actually, I think Ewers did as well as could be expected last year for essentially a frosh QB. He seems to recognize that he needs to grow and develop which is encouraging. I suspect we'll see significantly better performance from the overall offense with more receiving threats and an OL that's all coming back. The only area where there may be a modest drop-off is RB, but it won't be much based on the potential of that room.

I hear this often, and I simply disagree.  If this is the best you can expect from a freshman QB - then the coaches made a really bad decision A - not getting a portal QB or B - not just playing Card.   We came close to winning the Big 12 - and lost 2 games to top ten (at the time) teams, almost exclusively due to poor play at QB.  If this is the best that could be expected - he should have developed and gotten nothing but mop-up duty.

I think Ewers may turn out to be a fantastic QB.  But I don't see why everyone is acting like it's a no-brainer that he gets to start as long as he's on campus?  My guess is - the star rating he got after his junior year in high school.

You may be right - many agree with you.  I just disagree.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion. Not only was Ewers essentially a true frosh who hadn't played many meaningful snaps in about two years, but he was also recovering from a serious injury for much of the year, he was playing behind a very young OL, his prime target XW was playing injured for much of the year, and XW was usually double covered. That only left short to intermediate routes available. Furthermore, it's rare that a frosh QB is able to lead a team to greatness without a deep and skilled team around him. This year, more pieces are in place and QE has another year under his belt. I expect at least 10 wins and a B12 title as long as key players remain healthy.

Would you please name the key players.

I think it should be 11 wins and a Big12 title.

IMO only two positions can hurt a great season QB and coach.

if you look at all the great teams the last couple of years CFB (actually since the introduction of the spread) has come down to a Quarterback having a fabulous year and a Head Coach who can get that QB to operate the offense and not turn the ball over....the QB has turned into the FB equivalence of a point guard...IMO Sark learned that at Bama, and he is hoping QE can run his offense and get the ball to his playmakers
