Been watching the hell out of some football movies as the season approaches. It's something I go through every year this time. Tonight, it's Rudy.

Two of these movies I think are both good and worthy of comparison are Friday Night Lights and Varsity Blues. One is a documentary styled movie while the other is a bit more Hollywood influenced. Varsity Blues was the best thing MTV ever did, IMO. Friday Night Lights showed Texas football to the world. A great clash!

What say you?

VARSITY BLUES

or

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS

It's probably because you didn't like this scene

BTW, I think this actress was the only one who played in both flicks. Correct me if I'm wrong, but she also played the girlfriend who was caught on the couch topless in FNL.

"Varsity Blues"...totally fictitious, but not a bad representation of Texas high school football. I played Texas high school football...you're

a piece of shit if you lose and the coaches let you know it.

"Friday Night Lights"  historically follows the seasons of Odessa Permian...the pressures of living up to State Titles previously won.

Whats your favorite of the two, ETH? And where did you play ball?

Ali Larter. She was not in FNL.

Tidbit: I had the pleasure of sitting next to her on a flight back from Cabo a few years back. Absolutely stunning in person. She is equally as pleasant to talk to. Very down to earth.

Did she offer you a whipped cream sundae by chance?

Nope, but she did reveal that they used shaving cream in that scene because the whipped cream kept melting too fast.

Is this the same girl that was in the movie "She's out of my league"?

How we know who has or has not played the whipped cream game. . .

;)

Varsity is a Hallmark style movie with some decent lines. . .

Friday Night Lights was amazing . . .

Just my view from the cheap seats but they live in different universes.

Doc,

No, that was Alice Eve though they are very similar in looks.   As an aside, Alice's Dad had a role in that movie as well.

I think echeese pretty much nailed it. Both movies were great in their own right and I'd be a liar if I said VB doesn't hold a special place with me. But FNL is probably one of the greatest representations of High School Football displayed on film. On a sidenote, I think it's TV counterpart was just as, if not more, special.

IMO, this is like comparing Animal House to Porky's or Star Wars to Spaceballs. I am a member of criticker.com, where folks make their own lists of movies, rated from 0-100. On my criticker list, I have Friday Night Lights rated at 87. Varsity Blues is at 57. I think FNL just might be the best movie ever made about high school football.

completely agree. that was a terrific show with characters i suspect most of us living in texas and around high-schoolers and football players could relate to.

I've never seen Varsity Blues.

Friday Night Lights, however, became my second favorite sports movie of all-time after watching it for the first time. People who didn't grow up in Texas do not realize the importance of High School football in the state. I don't think they could have done a better job of portraying how everything shuts down for a big game. It was very well done.

i'm sure i'll regret asking, but what's number one ? i'm guessing 'the fish that saved pittsburgh'.

I was shocked as Varsity Blues I expected to hear was Lukas' all time favorite. . .

But I'm guessing Space Jams. . .

My top Sports movie is Bull Durham. . .

Hoosiers is correct.

I hated Bull Durham. I mean, seriously, they've got a couple of guys fighting over Susan Sarandon. SUSAN SARANDON! Disgusting.
Pfft. It's not about Susan Sarandon. If that's what you took from the movie, you completely missed the point.
