CROSSFIRE with McPhaul - NEW YEAR’S DAY EDITION

Yeah, I agree with your choice of Jim. Texas HC being what it is and Texas being Texas, why wouldn't we try to make Jim Harbaugh say no?

We did. We got him to stop saying no. Then he said no again. It wasn't just about the money with Jim.

John has his sights set on the college game. If it's not Texas, it will probably be Michigan. Michigan folks have been talking to him for weeks. But he's been very receptive to us recently.

Yeah, I forgot about the 2nd no. Well, that seals it for me then. I just can't see John Harbaugh - it's Briles. Who would have thunk it.

I will watch tonights game with real interest.

Your premise assumes the coach will prostitute himself for money, regardless of his situation? Would you? Would your family agree and, if they didn't, would you care? Besides, do you know their situation or are you just assuming theirs is like yours? You also assume the coach has never been contacted until now. We already know Saban has been contacted and he still chose Bama. How do we know that Fisher hasn't been already contacted? And is HE is in some kind of waiting position as well? Is it the never ending story of waiting for more money? At what point do you give up the ghost and admit it's over? In other words - where is your logic?
To start, I did not presume any of these things at all. You are pulling them an overactive imagination. I simply pointed out that by signing an extension any prospective head coach is better off than they were before, while still having the opportunity to possibly improve their situation even more should an attractive opportunity present itself. Apparently that's a hard concept to understand.

I endorse this report and if Patterson does in fact hire Harbaugh or Art I will be elated.

Never have really believed Saban was coming, but who the hell knows? Any of these 3 is a win. The rest are just that, IMO.

Fisher is a fall-back candidate, I guess.

Fisher to Texas is much less likely if FSU loses to Auburn. If it's not John Harbaugh, I hope that it's Briles - not Strong. Briles is a better talent evaluator, and he should think seriously about retaining Greg Robinson.

So, what you are saying, is that if you were offered MORE MONEY right now, for doing exactly what you are currently doing, that you wouldn't accept the raise right now? Oh, and despite the fact that you get the raise and security right now, you also have the option later to look around for an even better situation without consequence. Not signing would be a horrendous lack of judgement. Your premise is based off of horrible logic.

Did you say the above? Is this not your concept? Should I have read between the lines?

Furthermore, I have no problem entering into a discussion with you and if you convince me your argument is better than mine, I will acquiesce‎ to your logic. That being said, I don't appreciate your snarky comments - my judgement and imagination are just fine as are my comprehension skills. Take all that snark back to IT or OB.

Thanks. I think this latest report is the best I've read since finding this site about a month ago. It better acknowledges the uncertainty of the selection process. IMO, Harbaugh if he is offered and accepts, would be a good choice. One element many posters never mention is the academic reputation that UT wants to protect. Harbaugh would not diminish this as he spent time at Stanford so I would think has respect of the grade issues especially if a school does not have "dumb jock" majors (ie General Studies). For that same reason, I've questioned Nick Saban because he's a product of the SEC which on the academic side stinks. UT has made efforts to separate themselves from the SEC.

Another reason I'm leery on the Saban to UT idea is Saban's quote saying he signed his extension contract and looks forward to finishing his coaching career at Alabama. I know many will counter this saying he denied going to Miami from LSU and to Alabama. But he did not I believe say something so strong and decisive. If Saban does come to UT, Sports Illustrated, ESPN or Sporting News will have a field day writing about the conspiracy to lure Him to UT.

Well, we'll all find out soon. Again, thanks for writing the report.

Great piece of info, thank you Darrell. I'm in the camp of Saban, Briles, Harbaugh. I can't see us not getting one of those three

I'm not an insider, and I would never pretend to be one. No way any of those guys is coming here though.
Another assertion without any viable support. Why wouldn't they come here?

Okay. When you form a committee to help find a coach, you do it for a reason. To help you find the best coach possible for UT. What is the biggest issue at Texas? Lack of OFFENSE. Here's a stat for you..Army has more offensive touchdowns this year than Texas!!!So the search needs to be a HC that is offensive minded. So out of the possible candidates, that leaves Fisher and Briles. Saban Strong and Harbaugh are defensive minded coaches. Briles is building a new stadium and signed a contract extension and most importantly, his qb is returning. This gives Baylor a shot at a playoff, even with one loss.

Fisher signed an extension, has a heisman winner, is playing in a NC game, and has just flipped 1 gator committ and 98% chance of flipping another one, his son loves Winston too. Not leaving for Texas. He had a chance to leave for Auburn and more money and didn't. He's staying.

Harbaugh-signed an extension in 2013 and hasn't coached in college for 15 years. His name is only being brought up because of a dumb article. Also I live in DC area..no chatter at all about Harbaugh leaving at all.

Saban- too old to start over, he's only 2 months younger than Mack Brown. Saban is also in a unique position, the assistant coaches that he would want to bring with him the most, are the ones that would most likely get promoted if he left. And the ones that left Bama for Texas over money would be persona non grata in Bama, without a familiar staff the rebuilding process becomes longer. A one loss Bama is a shoo in for the play-offs. His ego might want to come to Austin, and it's certainly a great place to live, but he works through the process and stays.
should have stopped after your 5th post

I liked to know the details of the June Jones "hire" at ASU.

What was Patterson's involvement? Was it BMD's there that squashed that?

Harbaugh has a $7 million per year contract with the Ravens.

That's his and our starting point? Same for NS.

The schedule next year is more difficult.

BYU

UCLA

OU

@KState

@Tech

Mack left gapping positional hole. Plus QB and RB if Brown goes pro and Gray's injury.

I noticed Gus Malzahn gets no mention.

I think Strong would be a reach.

1)Did you see the last Texas game?

2)Lance Kiffin---Cautionary tale about a coach leaving for Greener Pasture$, and being Fired after failing to meet high expectations. A 6 year 50M contract means nothing if you get fired after year 2.

3) Very little time to effectively recruit for 2014 class.

4) All the listed coaches have a shot at the playoffs next year, at either the college or pro level.

5) All the college coaches have rec'd extensions

I have expressed my preferences:
Saban

Jim Harbaugh

Art Briles

But, if someone were to hold a blow torch to my golf clubs, I realistically think it will come down to two candidates:

John Harbaugh - you nailed it when you said an NFL HC job just eats up the coaches time. It's almost 24 hours a day. NFL coaches very rarely get to see their kids grow up. However, college HC's have very little time themselves, but better than the NFL.

Art Briles - It depends on whether or not his interview with Patterson is a hit or not. If he is hired, there will most likely be backlash from a few of the old UT guard that haven't forgiven him for his vote - a few years ago. These guys have long memories.

Your report is excellent, by-the-way.
Excellent report Darrell

Saban and Harbaugh are a tie for me

#3 is Fisher for me

Super Bowl ring or not - I'm getting the feeling that John just wants out of the NFL. It isn't that he wants to coach in college. He just wants to get out of the pros.
Not the right motivation if I'm doing the hiring.
Interesting, what coaches would you take over the defending super bowl champion coach, son of a college coach?

If Patterson interviews Briles then I'd definitely want an answer to why he voted OU #1 and Texas #5 in 2008 when we destroyed OU and lost in the last second to #6 Tech on the road at the end of the most brutal 4 game stretch ever. OU did NOT deserve to play for the MNC that year against Florida and proved it on the field. If his vote was reversed, the 0.0128 difference would have been eliminated and Texas plays Florida for the title. His association to Leach and Stoops should be included in his explanation for his vote. I do not forget and I do not want Briles, especially if he brings his DC with him.
