CROSSFIRE with McPhaul - NEW YEAR’S DAY EDITION

No question John Harbaugh is a terrific coach. I wonder however about the transition from a long stint in the NFL to the more interesting aspects of the college game, specifically recruiting.Just wondering since I believe recruiting has been the thing that has taxed many coaches most severely. Not because of the work load, I think it's more a case of dealing with flighty, unpredictable 18 years olds, and that group seems to get more convinced of their own importance every year.[/quote

Totally agree

I believe we are on to something here and is making me HAPPY. I like all of the 4 coaches. I approve.

Just watch him as he is mic'd up on the sideline. Watch how the players and assistants respond and interact with him.

With all due respect, you are really reaching. Everyone seems to acknowledge Jim Harbaugh is a crazy competitor but questions John? Even Jim says John is every bit as competitive as he is. JH has a great personality. He will strongly appeal to both players AND their parents. He is tough. He expects you to get it done or he will find someone who will. Let me know when you find anyone with something bad to say about JH. Players, coaches, anyone.

I have no dog in the hunt as far as the legal validity of an extension. I do know this - those coaches that have signed them did not have to. They signed them BEFORE their season was over, when they could have very well waited until afterwards. That spells desire to me, regardless of how valid the paper is.All the reasons given for why they signed are Bogus, IMO. These guys are star coaches and they could sign whenever they wanted. If the reasons given were "distraction" or "forced" do you really believe it? As far as Saban, for instance, could there have been a media storm that could have distracted him? Or his players, considering how they are insulated? Could any school "force" Saban, Briles or Fisher to sign or else?

I say nay, nay. They signed because they damned well wanted to stay.
So, what you are saying, is that if you were offered more money right now, for doing exactly what you are currently doing, that you wouldn't accept the raise right now? Oh, and despite the fact that you get the raise and security right now, you also have the option later to look around for an even better situation without consequence. Not signing would be a horrendous lack of judgement. Your premise is based off of horrible logic.

So now Orangebloods is buzzing with insiders and Ketch saying a camp is legitimately pushing Gruden. McPhaul, is this new news and can your contacts confirm?

Question regarding Charlie Strong. I'm asking because I do not know the answer.
Can a top tier 3 coach attract top OC/DC candidates? Overall, Texas is a top program any coach would want associated with. But another factor is the HC. Saban has national championships. Harbaugh has a Super Bowl ring. Both will be well respected. But can a young coach that had relative success in a weaker conference attract the best of the best assistant coaches?
Money talks. That and UT is a good career move for top assistants aiming to become head coaches (Harsin, Muschamp, Chizik, Robinson).

Saban then Briles/harbaugh for me. All three would be home runs

From Crossfire, we have:

1. Saban

2. John Harbaugh

3a. Briles

3b. Fisher

4. Strong

Hard to see how you could go wrong with 1, 2, 3a or 3b. But I think it's a pretty valid point about time management and the UT job being more than just Xs and Os. I think Saban or Harbaugh would kill it here. Briles and Fisher would be great, but there would be more to do compared to their previous gigs.

Won't there always be camps that will be pushing their agendas?

Darrell I have a question for you for all of HornSports Family. HAS MAD DOG, BIG DOG LEFT OR BEEN RETIRED OR FIRED. This Guy has to be gone. Please find out for us......Please

We do not need MAD DOG around at all. HOOK'EM

The football players and coaches want Briles.
That is who should be right after Saban. No questions asked. Football people know football.

I like Harbaugh....however I have some pauses with him. He doesn't know the state, hasn't coached college ball in a long time and the offenses in the Big 12 are not like the NFL. Its apples and oranges. He would have to get a DYNAMITE staff around him to help alleviate some of these possible issues. He would have the money to do so.

On Briles again, he is a Texan and is liked by high school coaches. He is one of us that has done it the hard way. His players play with an edge and he coaches with an edge. He coaches like a Texan should...with confidence and toughness. Finally, his offense is dynamic and its not a fluke. It is sound and is predicated off the run which sets up the rest of his playbook off PA and screens. Briles began his career as a DC so to think he ignores that is foolish.

Saban is the no-brainer....then its Briles.
Watch Baylor tonight and see if Briles defense is something you want at Texas

Awesome report. Brings a little clarity through all the smoke out there right now. Thanks mcphaul!

I don't want any coach who doesn't have recent college experience. Dealing with "entitled" 17 and 18 year olds has got to be taxing for anyone, especially to a coach who has been dealing with grown men for the last 16 years. Recruiting and development are the life-blood of college football. Why would we even consider someone who is wanting to lessen his work-load, and by the way, getting $6-8M to do so. I am obviously in the Saban, Fisher, or Briles camp. Happy New Year and Hook'em!

IF it were to be Briles, I doubt that he would bring Bennitt with him, or at least I would hope he wouldn't. The next coach will have some large $$$$ to work with as far as staff. Briles has been pretty limited at Baylor as far as funds for staff has gone I would think.
