SignUp Now!Are you talking about the university or the BMD's?How much can we realistically pay Saban?
I am impressed with logic and thinking ability. If it is okay with you, I would like to use the bolded line as a signature. Best and most succinct damned sentence I have read about the University of Texas. Bravo! Here is something I put up on another thread:
Think of the whole thing from a business perspective. Patterson is coming in having to rebuild and revitalize an entertainment division with approx $200 mil in revenues and 300 employees. The previous CEO had been there 32 years and had let the brand get stale. His three major operating units are the mothership (Football) and men's basketball and baseball.
He first needs to clean house, fire at least 100 employees (1/3 of the payroll) and rebuild his marketing, legal, accounting and admin support teams into an effective unit. That takes time and attention. He also needs to rebuild his three main operating units while ensuring revenues don't suffer.
The most important operating unit, football, needs a new manager to stabilize it until the CEO can totally rebuild it. Bring in a proven manager who only wants a few years more until retirement, but who you know can handle the unit. Pay him 10 years current pay for 6 years of work. You have effectively sealed his retirement for very little additional effort on his part.
Focus the CEO's attention on rebuilding corporate and the two smaller operating units whie also building relationships with major stakeholders. After two or three years of rebuilding the organization, you can then focus your full attention on the primary operating unit and you don't have to either be stuck with a manager who doesn't want to leave and whose firing might affect morale or have to question whether he is the right guy moving forward.
The reason Texas can spend so much money to get it right is because it costs more at Texas to get it wrong. When aggy left, the revenues of UT athletics were greater than those of aggy and Mizzou combined. We have gotten even bigger since then. A 10% drop in revenues at UT is more than the entire budget at over half of the NCAA schools. Trying to rebuild Bellmont and all three major programs at the same time risks chaos and chaos costs us more than at most other schools.
Whether Saban to UT makes sense to Saban is out of our control. Paying Saban $10mil (an incremental $4.5 mil over Mack) is worth the money.

Aggy says Big12 is no.good yet aggy was .500 team in Big 12. Conclusion aggy sucksThanks for your insight.
Oh, $#@! you aggy.
I get all this and the reality that business considerations might make Saban a good hire. I would just prefer a Gus Malzahn scenario at Auburn where a guy comes out of nowhere into a epic dumpster fire and converts it into a MNC contender in one year. Consider for a minute that Auburn gets UA at home to end the season in a big rivalry game and both teams have aggy as there only signature win this year. If Auburn wins out and Baylor loses 1 game, Auburn might go to the MNC game over tOSU on strength of schedule even with one loss. This type of scenario is much preferable to me for UT than Saban.Actually TexasFirst1, I really do appreciate the fact that you had the "cajones" to post this somewhat provocative statement. Especially, in lieu of all of the nick roll/tide saban enthusiast upon this great site.
I get it.. I really do. For your premise based upon the standpoint of "morality / principle" is hereby valid....
However, there is a certain "key ingredient" that you may not be thinking of at this time... recruits! Today's recruits, if I shall take the liberty of defining them in one word are "special". These young men, are just not the same ole recruits of the past... these guys love glamour. They "get off" to the excesses of media over sensationalism, many of these young men try not to adhere to the true definition of "commit". Trust me, if you build it big enough... they will come! This new generation of recruits, shall not be patient enough to sit around while we wait to nurture the vetting phase, of any prospective new head coach. Therefore, we may have to act... in as ruthless fashion as possible.
Hopefully TexasFirst1, this shall be the last time that I have to make this statement; should nick roll/tide saban emerge through the "matrix" to become the next head coach as per the University of Texas... First, I shall take an immediate shower! Second, I shall congregate with a bunch of my pals, and I shall be happy to celebrate to the fullest. Third, I shall journey to the nearest UT CO OP, and spend a small fortune upon all things burnt orange.... HOOK'EM!
Orrrrrrrrr, the Mods could do this...Honestly, I think the board is better off taking a no-response approach to obvious trolling from other fan bases. (Example: indecloudzua's post)

No offense, it's your opinion and you're entitled too it, but I think that line of logic is fairly flawed. Big contract coaches is the way of life over the past decade now. This isn't a New York Yankees or Los Angeles Dodgers scenario in which we're paying for better players. We're doing what many schools across the country are already doing, including Alabama. I mean you realize how much money Mack Brown has been making right? If your coach isn't working out, you gather your resources and you go out and buy the best coach you can afford. It's my opinion and the opinion of many that Texas isn't interested in finding an up and comer that can be groomed into a great head coach. They're looking for a great head coach that doesn't need grooming and can take control of a stifling football program. Texas runs the risk of being in this condition for years if they don't make a change. And if Texas remains in this condition, we will see Texas A&M, Baylor and Oklahoma all start leaving us behind. That's the grim reality. When Mack leaves, you get the best coach money can buy. It's not about the money amount you pay Saban. It is that any success under Saban at UT would always be Saban's success bought and paid for rather than success achieved by UT. Saban would never need UT and I doubt he would be around long term and the rest of the world would view the Saban hire as UT buying a championship(s). Yeah, that is one way to go but it would feel like a very hollow victory to me so I cannot get excited about Saban to UT. Just a personal opinion.
There is absolutely no doubt that UT must make a change in its head football coach after this season and I can see the business logic of wanting Saban. I would just prefer that UT administration possessed the skill sets to correctly identify the next Saban. As there is no evidence that UT administration possesses the ability to correctly judge coaching ability, Saban is the safe bet and the likely choice. He's just not my preference as a fan of UT.No offense, it's your opinion and you're entitled too it, but I think that line of logic is fairly flawed. The university. I was just wandering what people thought it would take to bring Saban here. I have an aggy friend that told me since Powers was elected to this academic post the he would get a lot of backlash if we paid Saban 7-8 million a year. Are you talking about the university or the BMD's?
Ah ha! Curiosity got the best of you, huh Doc?LOL - DMV, you know me as "snide aside"
