Crossfire with McPhaul - 11/13/2013

Be interesting if Bama offers a "lifetime contract" complete w/$3M raise, and $50M buyout or some such. Me thinks Bama BMDs are printing the money as we speak. Or... has that already been mentioned and Saban said, "no"? While I doubt the latter scenario, Bama's bound to try and shut this all down forthwith just like Baylor's rumored to this week, even tomorrow.
What say you, McPhaul, and various plugged-in types?
I'm not plugged in to either school by any stretch of the imagination but... I have a good friend who's a HUGE Bama fan who knows "some people who are part of a Bama BMD group prepared to offer Saban $1M more than Texas". He's adamant that Saban's not leaving and that if he considers it this group will make sure it doesn't happen. I asked him why they hadn't put the issue to rest and made an offer to extend his contract instead of waiting for us to make an offer...he had no answer for that. I enjoyed the silence when the implications/possibility started to sink in.

As it has been from the outset, it would seem that our biggest obstacle (in securing a desired coach) is our own inability to handle things more discreetly. I just hope that this isn't our undoing and that it will be interpreted in a less negative light (as in enthusiasm, excitement etc.).

Well, beating the hell out of OSU would mean that 100% will go down. More wins=Mack digging in his heels

I don't cheer for losses. Mack will be back if he wins out. That's the truth.
We all know if the next couple of games are bad, Mack is gone. So, if we continue to play well, there are two scenarios IMO if we win more than we lose these next few weeks:

1. Mack continues to show progress but we lose one more game, "this is a good season to build on for next year"... he truly wants to stay. Uh oh. Would be forced, in my mind. (35% chance IMO)

2. We win the Big12... (I think he decides, at this point, he won't come back)... we win the BCS game... this season is an obvious success. Sally tells Mack he fixed it, he's leaving Texas better than he found it, he'll be able to go out a winner, there are no more McCoys on the roster, etc. He truly hangs it up. (65% chance in my mind)

I get the impression that some think that "400" number is all administrators inside Bellmont. That number is probably pretty close (maybe a little high, IMO) for all the personnel employed by the AD. It would include a large medical staff, everyone at the dining hall (including cooks and food servers), the maintainence crews for all the stadiums, courts, gyms, golf courses, administrative offices, etc. and all the groundskeepers for said property.

Many of these people have other jobs, even other careers.

I don't want to think about the disappointment I'll feel if Saban doesn't end up at Texas, but I've already been sucked in, and there is no going back.

One of the reasons Roger Clemens decided to play for the Astros after playing for the Red Sox, Toronto and the Yankees is that he understood that if he wanted to retire in Texas, the value of his brand had to be extended to Texas. To do that, he made a connection with Texas fans.

What is the retirement value of Nick Saban's brand if his only market is Alabama? (Hint: the answer is "not nearly as much as its value if he makes a connection with UT fans in Texas.")

Exactly. He'll be in investment deals well after he's done in football as well.

Get ready then. I firmly believe that he's not coming. Hope to hell I'm wrong but I don't think he's leaving Bama. He'd retire IMO before coming to texas.

All this media song and dance isn't how Saban rolls. If theres a shot it needs to be silent the next few months.

But him playing for another national title will make it tricky for the media circus.

Wait and see.

IMO, for Texas to get a new coach it will take a 1-2 finish with a win against tech. If Mack finishes 2-1 and loses to Baylor by 14-24 pts he will pitch the idea of getting back to competing for a title and having Ash back next year to do it.

Mack spin.

I realize that I may be the only one with this opinion but paying huge amounts of money to get Nick Saban to come to UT to maybe win MNCs feels a lot like high end prostitution to me. I like Saban and I admire what he has accomplished but if Saban comes to UT for a lot of money and wins a MNC(s), would that be any different that bragging about having great sex with a really beautiful hooker? I would much prefer UT being sharp and prescient enough to identify the next Nick Saban and win a lot of MNCs with him.

Nick Saban is a lot like Jimmy Johnson. Always looking for new worlds to conquer. If he doesn't come to Texas, he wants to ride off into the sunset in a year or 2. I personally think he wants 5-6 more years and needs that new world to conquer. It just fits all too neatly.

Old coaches never want to quit. Look at Bobby Bowden and now Mack. If Mack were to go 2-1, I think that would be more incentive for him to retire in order to say he brought the program back to where it should be. Not saying he will but it would be the best scenario.

I dont really care what Bama BMD's say about what they could offer Saban and how they wouldnt let him leave. I dont think Saban would leave Bama based on just the pure salary offer. It would be for many more reasons than that.

and perhaps Bama BMD could match a Texas offer, but I dont believe for a second they could match the investment opportunities off the field that have already been discussed elsewhere. Eagle Shale deals can net some serious coin for those knowing what they are doing, and Texas would have plenty of people to help Saban "invest". Some claim that is already in progress. The multi millions Saban could make off the field with the people Texas BMD's would prob surround Saban with couldnt be touched by Bama IMO

I also have never bought into the notion this is just to get a raise out of Bama. things are so much further along than that

I dont know if Saban comes here or not...I think there is a good chance, but either way I dont think Mack is back next season regardless.

I joined this site as a result of your thread on IT. Understand that, even though I covet Saban, I am not in the camp of those that say he is coming. I'm not trying to post up on your opinions, but until I see WHO, WHAT and WHERE the "inside information" is coming from (and this includes JS info from IT), I read all of this with a huge helping of salt.I want to believe, I would love to believe, I NEED to believe, but I simply don't believe.
...And that's fair Doc!

Welcome btw

McP,

Good read. As you know, I'm here as a result of Santa's post over on IT. I'm a follower of JS and Nahlin's from the 'Cosm days, as they've earned my trust through their high % of correct calls. Your OB folks give you, Santa, and LL good rep. I like to sit, watch and wait. One thing I noticed and that I'm curious about; last weeks version stated that JJ was fully involved in the AD search and IS fully involved in the HC (Saban?) search. This is in direct opposition of what we're hearing on IT. Please comment, as I'm a little befuddled on that piece of info.

Lastly, I am definitely an advocate of more places to read info, vice less, especially if the info is of sound quality.
