Crossfire with McPhaul - 11/13/2013

McP,
Good read. As you know, I'm here as a result of Santa's post over on IT. I'm a follower of JS and Nahlin's from the 'Cosm days, as they've earned my trust through their high % of correct calls. Your OB folks give you, Santa, and LL good rep. I like to sit, watch and wait. One thing I noticed and that I'm curious about; last weeks version stated that JJ was fully involved in the AD search and IS fully involved in the HC (Saban?) search. This is in direct opposition of what we're hearing on IT. Please comment, as I'm a little befuddled on that piece of info.

Lastly, I am definitely an advocate of more places to read info, vice less, especially if the info is of sound quality.

\\m// Hook 'em! \\m//
DMV,

Welcome aboard my my man. I will be honest, Jamail's participation caught me off guard too. Keep in mind, Sexton and Saban were not happy with the way the Hicks managed expectations so, that in itself is a good reason to involved Joe. Joe is also expected to shell out a lot of money for the staff salaries.

BTW, we have Clendon Ross & other IT staff on our podcast. We too are big fans of the work JS & crew do on IT.

Texas fans are not used to a coaching search. There is not an open position as far as I am aware, pretty sure since it is a state institution they have to post that publicly some where. I encourage all Texas fans to apply for the job if it opens. What if Mack wins out? Can you force a coach out that won Texas its only national championship after a 10-2 season? Be careful what you wish for. Seen some of the names that have popped up on message board conversation, a reality check is in order. Mike Tomlin? Really? Gruden? Saban? Not happening. Urban Meyer? Hilarious. A neutral that tells things how they are. If you do not like it, sorry.

McP, I appreciate the prompt response, but I'm still having a challenging time with the bolded above. How is it not a conflict that JJ is Mack's attorney and publicly stated, along with McCombs, that Mack should be able to stay as long as he wants...if he is actively participating in the HC search committee? The "kiss of death" show of public support is misdirection then and Mack KNOWS he's hanging 'em up at seasons end then.

Still efforting to wrap my mind around JJ's active participation in both the AD & HC searches...I'll go back to watch and wait mode.

Mack won Texas its only national title? Um.....might want to fact check that. Texas is pretty universally considered the best college football job in the country by many national sources. Of course the names linked to that would be big names.

Since 1970.

Basically, "in recent memory." Some programs have trouble counting national titles, however. Not to mention a certain SEC team.

Wow, been busy at work the last couple of days, but seen a thread on OB earlier, asking what happened to McPhaul's thread...

Guess we know what happened to that thread.

Great stuff, McPhaul..sure hope you're 100% right!

I'm starting to feel a little more at home around here. I've been on OBs for so many yrs, its kinda odd starting over. There are plenty of OBs over here though. Seems like a bunch of the drive by artists didn't make the trip over here, at least not yet.

Glad to see you over here!

I'm not thinking Saban would be moved by a counter-offer from Alabama. How about being the first coach to have an MNC from THREE different universities. He could do it here.

Yup! Too many folks (mostly Bama Fans) are dismissing this possibility.

Thanks. I'll do my best to behave but cannot promise to not slap HookemDTX!
El Bandito, Glad to see you made it on board (no pun intended). I was the guy who called you back tonight..... Because we deliver high quality H2O and great customer service at Horn Sports.

Seriously, glad to see you here bud.

I realize that I may be the only one with this opinion but paying huge amounts of money to get Nick Saban to come to UT to maybe win MNCs feels a lot like high end prostitution to me. I like Saban and I admire what he has accomplished but if Saban comes to UT for a lot of money and wins a MNC(s), would that be any different that bragging about having great sex with a really beautiful hooker? I would much prefer UT being sharp and prescient enough to identify the next Nick Saban and win a lot of MNCs with him.
Actually TexasFirst1, I really do appreciate the fact that you had the "cajones" to post this somewhat provocative statement. Especially, in lieu of all of the nick roll/tide saban enthusiast upon this great site.

I get it.. I really do. For your premise based upon the standpoint of "morality / principle" is hereby valid....

However, there is a certain "key ingredient" that you may not be thinking of at this time... recruits! Today's recruits, if I shall take the liberty of defining them in one word are "special". These young men, are just not the same ole recruits of the past... these guys love glamour. They "get off" to the excesses of media over sensationalism, many of these young men try not to adhere to the true definition of "commit". Trust me, if you build it big enough... they will come! This new generation of recruits, shall not be patient enough to sit around while we wait to nurture the vetting phase, of any prospective new head coach. Therefore, we may have to act... in as ruthless fashion as possible.

Hopefully TexasFirst1, this shall be the last time that I have to make this statement; should nick roll/tide saban emerge through the "matrix" to become the next head coach as per the University of Texas... First, I shall take an immediate shower! Second, I shall congregate with a bunch of my pals, and I shall be happy to celebrate to the fullest. Third, I shall journey to the nearest UT CO OP, and spend a small fortune upon all things burnt orange.... HOOK'EM!

Glad to see you over here!
I have always enjoyed your posts & you have always answered my questions & I really appreciate your info. I don't understand all the haters on OBs. its not just to the insiders, its directed at anyone that posts. Like I told a few OB buddies today, its like OBs without the hate. Don't get me wrong, I still love OBs & will remain a member there probably for good. That said, I'm enjoying a fresh start here. That's why I decided to "wear a mask". I mean its all about enjoyment, right? I wonder how many other OBs are incognito over here.

Thanks for returning my call during your family time. It is appreciated and novel these days. Customer service. Now that's a concept I can support.

Here is something I put up on another thread:

Think of the whole thing from a business perspective. Patterson is coming in having to rebuild and revitalize an entertainment division with approx $200 mil in revenues and 300 employees. The previous CEO had been there 32 years and had let the brand get stale. His three major operating units are the mothership (Football) and men's basketball and baseball.

He first needs to clean house, fire at least 100 employees (1/3 of the payroll) and rebuild his marketing, legal, accounting and admin support teams into an effective unit. That takes time and attention. He also needs to rebuild his three main operating units while ensuring revenues don't suffer.

The most important operating unit, football, needs a new manager to stabilize it until the CEO can totally rebuild it. Bring in a proven manager who only wants a few years more until retirement, but who you know can handle the unit. Pay him 10 years current pay for 6 years of work. You have effectively sealed his retirement for very little additional effort on his part.

Focus the CEO's attention on rebuilding corporate and the two smaller operating units whie also building relationships with major stakeholders. After two or three years of rebuilding the organization, you can then focus your full attention on the primary operating unit and you don't have to either be stuck with a manager who doesn't want to leave and whose firing might affect morale or have to question whether he is the right guy moving forward.

The reason Texas can spend so much money to get it right is because it costs more at Texas to get it wrong. When aggy left, the revenues of UT athletics were greater than those of aggy and Mizzou combined. We have gotten even bigger since then. A 10% drop in revenues at UT is more than the entire budget at over half of the NCAA schools. Trying to rebuild Bellmont and all three major programs at the same time risks chaos and chaos costs us more than at most other schools.

Whether Saban to UT makes sense to Saban is out of our control. Paying Saban $10mil (an incremental $4.5 mil over Mack) is worth the money.
