Chalk Talk: Culture Change

Well done, Coleman!

If that article doesn't get you pumped about the potential that comes with Strong, I don't know what will!

Thanks, Coleman.  One thing that might be worthy of discussion , would be the changes that happened in the latter Mack Brown years that obviously created the need for a transition to someone with the attitudes of Coach Strong.  I do not mean this as an invitation  to bash Coach Brown.  Obviously things worked well early on in the Brown Years until the last few years.  From a cultural perspective, what changed?  Was it simply an overblown sense of entitlement coupled with misreads on some key recruits and a lack of development of some of those recruits, namely quarterbacks?  Or, was there more to it than that?

Nice article, Coleman.

I've always been interested in the mental side of the game. As near as I can tell, the average fan greatly underestimates the role of confidence....especially in 18-21 year old players.

You never can tell unless your one of the guys in the locker-room. Teams fail for a number or reasons, just like companies. It is almost impossible to pinpoint one exact reason and is most likely a combination of small problems that gave rise to new, larger problems.

There are also two other kinds of coaches, those who stick with what has worked for them in the past because it has worked for them in the past, and those that are flexible enough to adjust to what will work for them with what they have now.  I do not know for sure, but I am hoping that Coach Strong has a heavy dose of the latter.

Nice perspective for the casual fan. Not something they think about much.

Almost invariably, winning coaches get somewhat complacent after a number of years and go into a slump of sorts. Very few indeed can maintain the highest standards throughout their careers, unless they retire in their prime.

Bo Schembechler, Woody Hayes, Bear Bryant, Joe Paterno and even Darryl Royal had some tough seasons late in their careers...kinda like Mack.

Good Gawd,

Although I agree with 99.9% of what you are saying the point that sticks in my crawl is the spelling of "DARRELL".

Do you not have a good friend that spells his name the same way?

And you get pissed when we say damn yankee:)
