Big 12 Expansion Project

it's tough.  whadaya do?

you know we're taking four, that three ahead of you have said, "our number is zero for a long time -- we just want in", and that there's one more to talk to after you.  whadaya do?

i know what i do, but it's easy to say it.

give Texas our entire share
first, realize we're all scratching our heads.

i'm not at all sure that the boogyman here is the longhorns.  in fact, one of my suspicions is the latest uh gambit is a poke-in-the-eye toward the conference for being so cynical.  cynical over the expansion issue and cynical over the baylor issue.

i can't even decide whether this is one game being played or two.  or more.  i think we all sense there's chess being played, but it's dizzying just trying to figure out 'oo killed 'oo.

tech pushing a chit into the middle messed up one of my theories but sparked at least two others.

i'm coming around to the idea that the football season exists primarily to set up the real games in the off season.

I was just being facetious. My insinuation is that most teams in the BIG 12 want expansion because the conference is their life line. Now, they may not want Houston or whoever but politics aside, I truly believe 80% of the conference wants expansion. Why? Because if Texas and OU bolt in 2025, the conference will likely still be better in football than the ACC and still have a chair at the big boy table.
The obvious solution which takes all this expansion off the table is if the playoff is expanded to have at least 8 teams (I would prefer 16). The problem currently is you have 5 major conferences vying for 4 playoff spots. This leads to everybody attempting to solve the problem by having only 4 power conferences (+ Notre Dame). So we need 4 power conferences comprised of 16 teams each. That is 64 (not including Notre Dame) which ultimately leaves us with 65 teams monopolizing the access to the National Championship.

If we just expand the playoff we don't need to go through with this ridiculous expansion. Then there will be a way that Boise or Cincinnati or Memphis or Houston, etc can make the playoff along side the rest of the blue bloods.

But, as usual, I forgot that the purpose of the current playoff isn't to find the best team in college football.

Pre-BCS the polls were rigged. BCS was computer + rigged polls. The current 4 team playoff is like an Afghani sit down of the blue blood elders. The only way to find the best team is have a vastly expanded national playoff.

I would welcome Colorado back to the BIG 12 with open arms. It is doubtful but, as the article points out, there is no exit fee for PAC teams at this time. Which other conference can poach the PAC geographically? Only the BIG 12. The PAC financials are lousy and if CSU gets the call while CU languishes in the PAC, it could get even worse on the field for the Buffs.

Who knows, there might be a day when Aggie starts to regret that 100 year decision and arrives back on out doorstep with hat in hand.

I still think you have to do something for WVU. That means Memphis or Cincy, preferably the latter.

If you add BYU, which I think is a good possibility, then you have to consider a UH or geographically similar school. Something that isn't really east.

So that leaves you with one spot to bring in with Cincy, if you take four schools.

If you only take two schools, I see no benefit in adding BYU IF you still want to do something for WVU. BYU is a travel nightmare for WV.

The leaves me thinking that maybe its Cincy and UCF if only two are added, then BYU and Houston if four are added.
Agreed. The first two moves need to be BYU and then find a regional partner to reward West Virginia for their loyalty for joining the conference (Cincy/Memphis (my pick))

Then after settling on those two, wait out to get to 14. Not super long, but see who wants it more. UCF obviously wants it bad but the school and their fans need to prove they can bring in the eyeballs by being above average in AAC ratings. Then the 14th will be whoever sells it the most.

ESPN story from yesterday (sorry no link) indicated Tulane to be a real dark horse. Offers up New Orleans market, would bring Big 12 AAU count to 4 schools (to tie SEC), and is committed to spending large sums of money on athletics in the next couple of years. Downside – football program is very bad.

Article stated that Vanderbilt is in the SEC for this very reason. Could Tulane be the Big 12's Vanderbilt?

How discouraging, if we're serious about them.

Latest buzz is the four additions will be BYU, UH, UC, and.....(wait for it)....Colorado State. Rationale is twofold:

  1. CO has more Big12 alumni than any state outside our current footprint
  2. Big12 doesn't want to hurt AAC too badly by taking more than two members
With that in mind, I propose two divisions West/East with permanent cross-division rivals.

WEST - UT, Tech, BU, KU, KSU, CSU, BYU

EAST -  OU, OSU, TCU, WVU, ISU, UC, UH

Yes, CSU vs UC and BYU vs UH have no history. But, this does protect "Farmageddon" and the "Revivalry". Speculation is BYU & CSU will begin play next year and UH & UC will kick-off in 2018 due to AAC commitments.

I can live with this arrangement.

Send bailor to the sec, or anywhere outside of Texas.

JB, when you say UC do you mean Cincinnati or Colorado? I assume you mean Cincinnati.

I would like this model of expansion. If we empower CSU we begin to put pressure on Colorado and the PAC.

It would be nice to see another conference be considered the elbow of conferences.
