IMO, we could be venturing into territory whereby this current class can be compared favorably to the best UT class ever.

As far as I know, the Chris Simms class has been widely regarded as our best ever. If we land White, Ossai, Waddle, etc., it might be worth a comparison.

We can't make the complete comparison yet, but we can start.

Daniel, do you have a good idea of what we can use as a barometer against the two? Total points? Stars?

Didn't we have the #1 class in the country in 2002?
Yes and it's considered as one of the best ever.

5. Texas Longhorns, 2002

Rank: 1st (Rivals), 28 signees
Key Players: Vince Young, Kasey Studdard, Rod Wright, Brian Robison, Aaron Ross, Chase Pittman, Justin Blalock, Aaron Harris, David Thomas, Selvin Young

This group was the core of the 2005 national championship run led by superstar quarterback and five-star recruit Vince Young. He was the gem of the nation’s No. 1 class that eventually featured numerous NFL Draft picks. Ross, Studdard, Wright, Robison, Pittman, Thomas and Blalock were all huge pieces to Mack Brown’s championship puzzle and most of them have gone on to excel in the NFL.

I always thought the WorsterBunch was considered the best class ever ?
Record wise they are. Recruits could not play as freshmen and they had a three year record of 30-2-1. I consider the 2002 class the best. If VY had come back for his senior year then I believe that class would have been 38-1 and two National Championships. Too bad we will never find out.

No way is this class better than the 2002 class. The 2002 had the the best college QB that I have seen. This class has two four star QB's whom  I hope at least can become a good QB in the future.

The Super Sophomores vs the Worster Bunch

You can't just judge the class by the achievements of a few. It must be judged as a whole.

Because of that, the 2002 class comes back down to earth.

The busts of that class included Edorian McCullough, Robert Timmons (never made it here), Marco Martin (injury ended career in all star game), Albert Hardy, Dustin Miksch, Brett Valdez, Clint Haney, Garnet Smith, Michael Williams and Tully Janszen.

So if we're judging by achievement, those must be deducted.

The star rankings of that class included

2-stars: Dustin Miksch

3-stars: Marcus Meyers, Matthew Melton, Garnet Smith, Clint Haney, Brett Valdez, Brian Robinson, Lyle Sendlein, Kasey Studdard,

4-stars: Michael Williams, Aaron Ross, David Thomas, Tully Janszen, Aaron Harris, Edorian McCullough, Chase Pittman, Selvin Young, Neal Tweedie, Larry Dibbles, Robert Timmons, Marco Martin, Alberty Hardy.

5-stars: Vince Young, Rodrique Wright, Justin Blaylock, Brian Pickryl.

While the class did lose half its members at some point, half of them were highly successful and exceeded expectations. The number of 3-stars (several) is countered by the number of 5-stars (4). I'm not sure we've had four 5-star recruits in a class outside of this one.

The current class is outright loaded with 4-stars. There's one 5-star and one 3-star.

What’s nuts about this is “best QB” couldn’t even win a heisman. WhaT a crock.  Granite Reggie bush was beast mode also

While I love the Worster class, I won't count it simply because it's all white. Because of that, it can't be the best ever because it had one type of athlete in it.

We're kidding ourselves if we think it could stand up to a 2002 class or even the 1999 class. When your recruiting pool includes EVERYBODY, your class is better.

As for Okiehorn's post, above, I agree. As far as I'm concerned, VY was the real Heisman winner that year.

From a results standpoint, this right here pretty much puts them at the top, imho.

The Worster Bunch went 30 – 2 – 1 won 30 straight games and either 1 national championship and another if you count the one that was awarded at the end of the season instead of bowl game.

I can't believe that Mack in all his wisdom had VY splitting time with Chance Mock...smh

Against other white competition. Not real impressive unless you're comparing to the same.

The black athlete made a big difference in college football.

VY was not that great of a QB when he arrived in Austin. It took some time for him to reach greatness.

True, but he would have had an extra year had he not had to split time.  Mack made several dumb decisions if hindsight is 20/20: not starting Benson as a freshman until after the Hoe-U game, forcing Applewhite to split time with Simms, and the aforementioned VY debacle.  And I really think the Young/Mock issues had a lot to do with Roy Williams pouting because he wanted the ball and Mock was the more polished passer...

VY has some trouble passing, early. He was able to hone that skill as he went on.

Simms deserved to be replaced at times, such as the Colorado debacle. Could Applewhite have performed so well had he rode pine all year. Simms was still a young buck at the time.

Agree about Mack. The Benson decision was stupid and embarrassing. Keep your porsche in the garage and drive the Rambler instead. lol Its just OU. lol

Maybe I am missing the point but comparing the current class with past classes and achievements is futile.

The current class has not achieved anything yet, so calling it the best class ever is premature.

Okay, I guessed I missed where it said in the original post that this discussion was limited only to teams that had black players and played against teams that had black players  ;)

Just messing with you SHA, all in fun.

But you still can't find a class with better results  :D

BTW, the Worster class included 2 guys I went to school with in Sherman, Mike Dean and Greg Ploetz. Mike was the 190 lb OG who went up against Mike McKoy the All-American 270 lb DT from Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl game. And played well.
