Bama fan speaks on Coach Saban Rumors

Thiggy

thank you for the welcome and very well said. (and bang up Avatar too btw)

I am starting to understand what you guys have been hearing better.

I think everyone lost their shirts in real estate from when Coach Saban became HC at Bama (2007, at the peak of the real estate market to now). I lost over a $1 million dollar myself in my investments, it was gut wrenching.

And I grew up with Paul Jr., heck, Coach Bryant was my neighbor and I used to caddy for him when he came home from work. Billy, his long time driver, would drop him off at Indian Hills Country Club and he would walk the back nine until it ended at his house. He would only carry one club and a few balls. If he ran out of balls, guess who went diving into the ponds to get more......lol

I can't believe that Alabama supporters wouldn't make him whole. They basically gave his home to him. that is worth $5 million.

If you knew how much it hurt to lose around here (see Dubose, Shula) it is far less painful to pony up the cash

I came to this board simply to try and understand why UT fans thought that they could outspend Alabama on a college football coach.

yes, you guys could outspend us on a trip to the moon, or pretty much anything else, but

seriously,

how much are you willing to throw (I no longer will say 'pay') at Coach Saban to make him come to UT?

give me a number. Not a "more than you can" statement

give me an amount that UT can pay Coach Saban per year to come to UT

then we can talk one to one

hey Monarch

I don't post on BamaNation or anywhere else

I, as a physician, was just very interested to learn why Texas fans thought they could outspend Alabama fans for a "College Football Coach"

if we were talking about a supercollider or high speed rail transit system, that I could understand

but a college coach?

I just wanted to get an idea of how much you guys would consider paying a college football coach.

can someone just answer me that?

What if we already gave him a deal that covered the 30 mil he lost at Bama? Would that make it easier for you see where we are coming from?

Willie Boy is hitting the nail right on the head. Alabama has more than enough money to keep Saban. If he comes it will be for some other reason than money.

Willie, what's your opinion on Sexton telling Texas last year that Saban was interested in the job?

"What if we already gave him a deal that covered the 30 mil he lost at Bama? Would that make it easier for you see where we are coming from?"

can you explain how you came to this number of $30 million?

He only got paid $5 million a year, x 7 years = $35 million, but 50% of that went to taxes, so only 17 million to spend on investments if his family didn't eat or use water, gas, electricity, etc

so seriously, the most he may have lost is more like $5 million, maybe $10 million if his family was on rations

take your pick

you truly think Bama couldn't come up with that?

I think Saban said "Texas would be the only school he'd consider leaving Alabama for". That doesn't mean he's interested in taking the job. And we approached Sexton.

I do not know if he will stay at Bama or if he comes to Texas, but all this internet talk makes for interesting reading. I guess we will all know in sometime in January or maybe December.

And I think you pretty much summed up with these rumors persist with some people saying it's 100%. They are doing so for the increased traffic flow on those sites. If it were anything beyond middle school girl rumors it would be on every conceivable sports and news network in the country. But I'm anxious to hear what someone's friend who friends with someone who's friends with the best friend of Patterson.

Willieboy,

Do you think Saban came to Bama broke? He gave your big money guys money he had set aside, and they squandered it. He also lost some money on previous real estate deals in Baton Rouge. Which only makes the money Bama bmd's lost hurt that much more.

We've offered to help him make up that money with solid investments. Heard of a guy named Rex Tillerson? Look him up.

To answer your main question, no, we arnt going to pay him more than what Bama could afford to pay him "on the books," 7.5M sounds about right. Perception is everything and paying a coach more than fair market value is stupid and screams unwanted attention, it doesn't matter that he craps crystal balls. Although, yes, we are willing to assist him in the investment ways that Bama simply can't afford to do.

thank you for an interesting and worthwhile response

Jimmy Sexton is the agent for most of the power players these days. He represents "....

sorry, but tried to get a complete list to post, but is taking too much time, will post it soon. You won't believe all the coaches this guy represents!

I understand that Saban did lose money on investments, as did everyone since 2007 when he came to Alabama (the peak of the real estate market)

He was made whole on much of the loss, but the large group he was part of decided that there was some "hurt" to be absorbed by all members, as the rest of the country took it on the chin.

He hasn't asked for a raise while other coaches who haven't won 3 out the last 4 NC's have risen to his pay level

The group that owned his famous Georgia lake mansion investment sold it for much less than he wanted (not a Alabama issue, he bought before Alabama)

He wants to be made whole, and remain the highest paid coach in football and wants a less rigorous schedule in dealing with the booster clubs and all the numerous meetings (this is actually the MAIN issue). He wants to concentrate on his job and start spending more time at home now that he has the program established.

He wants assistant coaches to make many/much of the events that he previously had to do himself

THIS is why I wonder.....why would he take the Texas job? Texas would involve not only restarting the program but also all the myriad demands of the Longhorn Network, a WHOLE ADDITIONAL LAYER of work for him over his days at Alabama

does this make sense to you?

If I was Bama coach, and had no ties to Bama, and could go anywhere I wanted....

Texas would be #1

USC #2

Florida #3

"But I'm anxious to hear what someone's friend who friends with someone who's friends with the best friend of Patterson."

growing up in Tuscaloosa,

I know EXACTLY what you mean!! :)

Actually sabans camp approached UT and I'm sure you will cry about proof so call up sexton's office and see if he will chat with you. And while you keep crying for absolute proof ( why are you even on a sports message board looking for this stuff?) let's use some common sense. As even the AP story pointed out after the hicks/hall meeting with saban hicks met with mack to discuss a potential retirement. Do you think someone of hicks stature ( and a good friend of Mack's) goes to him to inquire if he was ready to step down after speaking to sabans camp if he didn't have some real confidence in sabans interest?

it's about recruiting

California, Texas, Florida are first tier

Georgia second tier

Louisiana, Ohio, Alabama third tier
