5 Thoughts Following the Loss to Oklahoma State

Gundy was trying to get his players away from the skirmish. TH got confused and thought Gundy was throwing haymakers or something. Not one of TH's better moments.
You might feel differently if you had heard Tom Herman’s interview after the game. He admitted to misinterpreting Gundy’s actions. He thought Gundy was coming out after Hager. During a post came handshake Gundy explained to him his actions and Tom apologize to him.

You could tell their post gave meeting was amicable.

And yes Gundy should have been penalized for coming on the field. No questions about it.

I'm glad Tom said that. Its too bad it happened.

Go ahead and penalize Gundy. Its not like it was going to help or hurt anything. It was the last play of the game, a kneel-down, and should not have led to what happened.

We really struggle with speedy guys on defense. Our defense looked so slow other than Gary Johnson last night. We really need to improve our speed on the defensive speed. Good effort for the second have but a damn piss poor first half.

For you guys criticizing Herman for what he did and saying Gundy did nothing wrong, you need to watch the video really, really close. Gundy clearly yells at, makes gestures toward, and points at Texas players! That's what Herman responded to and I don't blame him one bit. Gundy is getting a free ride when he shouldn't and Tom is getting undeserved criticism. He took up for his damn team!

If I'm CDC, I'm telling him "way to go" and that I want to see more of that fire.

Texas was lost all night on defense..wr wallace dominated the secondary he had a career night 10 catches 200+ yds..cmon man!!! Then okst rbs ran through and around the front seven with ease but for me the killer was allowing a average qb run around like hes VY and throw like hes a heisman type qb is unforgiveable..the rush ends and LBs kept crashing in following the backs while the qb kept the ball on the zone read option..i kept yelling at the tv to hold the line...orlando should have played thar better too many times defenders blew right past the ball carrier..smh tough to watch over and over again

Furthermore, Gundy had absolutely NO reason whatsoever to even run onto the field. Watch the video and the refs have it under control and nothing really happens to escalate it under Gundy runs on the field. F Gundy.
You're not going to get me to defend Gundy. I'm now trying to forget Saturday. Deer season opens next weekend, so thats holding me together for now. lol

More thoughts....

I'm wondering now how difficult it is for college students age 18 to 21 to stay focused in a buttoned-up business like manner for 12 straight games that amounts to an entire semester. You have to learn how to have the RPMs roaring every 7 days, to include focused preparation.

I'm assuming a coach name of Nick Saban has figured out how to do that.

Looking back, Mack garnered a string of 9-win, then 10(+) win seasons. But in that stretch he did the following:
a) 5 straight losses to OU, two of them historic beat downs
b) often not a really outstanding product on the field (I recall more batted passes than I ever saw elsewise in my entire life)
c) Only won two... 2... BigXII titles in 16 years.

Somehow it seems the Horns were flying high the whole of Mack's first dozen seasons, but there were crushing losses in there now and then, and some Sept games were not "lock'em up" games, in spite of lopsided scores. I kept wanting to see the other team almost owned. The Big Three came in and never really shot the moon. (old domino game). The juggernaut never came about.

My disappointment Sat night was throwing away a #6 ranking the week before the CFP (that it?) rankings come out. Plummeted to #15. This team was in position to go all out and win the remaining regular season games -- come what may in the title game. At least go 11-1 and Top 10 and in the conversation. That was left on the field all 60 minutes of the clock. Know how hard it is to get a #6 ranking these days with 3 to 4 spots annually handed to the same several teams until they basically throw them away. Last time here, the freshmen were not in middle school. Or barely.

That was a gift to have had USC, TCU and OU in the first half of the season and get through those games. The #6 spot was likely (by now anyway) too high a perch. But my gosh, you get there why don't you show up ready to bit the heads off nails and smash wooden wine kegs and throw tires over goal posts. I saw no anger, hostility, fierceness on that field.

I'm an older guy. I stood in card section on a dismal Nov afternoon and watched TCU with Sonny Gibbs beat a #1 Texas team 6-0. That was my worst loss ever in person. That and the end of the 30-game streak against Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl rematch. Sat in the end zone and took it on the chin from Notre Dame fans in the final minutes. You have to hate losing really bad to bring it every game. Maybe too much emotional-mental energy to ask young men for full season. And, the other team is totally amped to ruin your day. That's part of it too.

Finally, I wish the AD would not accept any night road games after middle of Oct in BigXII. Ever.

I was at both those games, also.  I still haven't gotten over the late hit on Jimmy Saxton in the TCU game.  Froze our tails off and watched Joe Montana dissect us in the Cotton Bowl.  All losses are bad, but some leave you with that sick feeling in your stomach like you're falling, but haven't landed yet.

This loss was bad, but not totally surprising.  We can still turn it around and have a really good season.

TWO 4th down TD's and You let the QB score twice with the DE's crashing in...I have nothing else to say.  That was trash.

I new in my gut that a loss was very likely, but not like that.

Very true, but that was the problem...no one expected that.  Players, coaches, or in truth, us.  Honestly, that was a great call by Gundy.

That being said,  no way it should happen twice.  "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me."

Texas has to find its defense if it wants to make the Big 12 title game

STILLWATER, Okla. -- Oklahoma State demolished Texas' playoff dreams Saturday.

While demolishing the Longhorns' defense along the way.

After struggling offensively for much of the season, Oklahoma State exploded for 260 yards in the first quarter alone, the second-most yards Texas had given up in any quarter over the past 15 years, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

The Cowboys never looked back from there, building a 17-point lead by halftime before holding on for a 38-35 upset victory.

"The first half, defensively," Texas coach Tom Herman said after the game, "I never thought we'd see that."

Few others did, either.

The same Texas defense that eliminated USC's running game, shut out Kansas State for a half and checked Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray, at least for three quarters, had few answers for the Cowboys, who on Barry Sanders night unleashed an unexpected offensive display befitting their 1988 Heisman Trophy winner.

After gaining only 311 yards the entire game at K-State, the Pokes put up 31 points, 378 yards and 19 first downs on a whopping 53 plays in the first half against Texas.

The Longhorns couldn't cover wideout Tylan Wallace, who on the way to finishing with a career-high 222 receiving yards outmaneuvered Texas' defensive backs for a series of jump-ball grabs.

The Longhorns also couldn't corral running backs Justice Hill and Chuba Hubbard, who danced their way to 172 rushing yards combined.

And Texas, most egregiously, couldn't bring down quarterback Taylor Cornelius, who in addition to passing for three touchdowns lumbered to a pair of rushing scores.

"What didn't happen?" said Herman, when asked what happened to his defense in the first half. "We didn't stop the run, which we've done so well around here. When the ball was in the air, we didn't play it properly -- misread balls, took poor angles. And their guys made plays."

The Texas defense finally settled in after halftime, giving quarterback Sam Ehlinger the opportunity to ignite a comeback. And after failing to generate any rhythm in the first half, Ehlinger caught fire late in the third quarter, tossing a pair of touchdowns to bring Texas to within a field goal. But once again, when the Longhorns desperately needed a critical defensive stop to give Ehlinger another chance, they were unable to get one.

On third-and-goal from the 10 with six minutes remaining, Cornelius kept the ball on a zone read, broke through a tackle attempt by Texas freshman safety B.J. Foster, then barreled over the pylon to put the Pokes back up by two scores. Cornelius would later end the game on another third-down keeper for the game-clinching first down.

"The quarterback did a phenomenal job of keeping it," Herman said. "Obviously, we underestimated his ability to run the ball."

Texas best not underestimate anyone else if it plans on playing in the Big 12 championship. Sure, Texas dominated Oklahoma earlier this year, for the most part. The Longhorns also skated by in narrow victories over Tulsa, K-State and Baylor -- a fact overshadowed by Texas' Red River performance. Herman conceded as much Saturday.

"We are not at a point in our program where we cannot play our best," he said. "Especially on the road, especially against a really good football team and expect to win."

That's what Texas faces next in West Virginia, which boasts perhaps even better complementary offensive skill talent than Oklahoma State, to go along with one of the country's top passing quarterbacks in Will Grier.

"Our long-term goals are still ahead of us," Herman said, omitting that Texas' playoff hopes had effectively been extinguished. "Going into November, we're in contention for the Big 12 title."

That alone has already made this the best Texas season of the post-Mack Brown era.

But to remain in Big 12 title contention in Herman's second year, the Longhorns will need their defense to show up. After no-showing in Stillwater.

Mullet has won 7 of the last 9 against the horns. Speaks volumes where Texas is at.

Texas better show the hell up Saturday. Playing a MUCH better ball team

Orlando is going to have to dial up the pressure and the offense has to establish the run game this week against West Virginia .  The football program is improving but they need to realize that it will take at least 3 years of winning before we can actually say that Texas is back. .

This has been a much better season than I expected. I see improvement, but we aren't top 10. Maybe top 25.

One bright spot I have noticed is that we are making adjustments at half-time. Whether we played good or bad in the first half, we have made adjustments and have done better.

This team needs to play it's A game otherwise it will get embarrassed. And I hope they are embarrassed by the loss.
