Game Week – Georgia at Texas

QE3 just doesn’t read the field well. His mobility in the pocket is maybe the worst in all of the NCAA. So many sacks could’ve been avoided. He is not making the right reads almost ever anymore. Yes Georgia got pressure a lot but if QE3 stepped up or scrambled a little like Beck was doing, he could’ve gotten the ball out. His other throws were short, behind, etc. his other completions any other QB could’ve made.

Give QE3 one last shot against Vandy. If he can’t have a commanding game, it’s time to give it to Arch. But he likely will fool us.

Arch is the better QB now. If QE3 was playing like he did against Michigan, that would be a different story. I think the team especially the skill players on offense tend to prefer Arch because we are way more explosive.
Michigan had two good lineman & cb back on defense. Were 1 dimensional on offense. Now that we been brought down to earth maybe we can concentrate on SEC.

Something was definitely wrong with Ewers. I’ve noticed in some games he has a blank stare in his eyes, I saw it often his first year and he had that look on Saturday.
I use to read it as he didn’t know what was going on around him, like he just wasn’t real bright. In some games, when he’s playing well he doesn’t have that look. He’s interacting with teammates and showing more emotion.
My dime store psychologist take is he’s a natural introvert and he over analyzes himself internally. In games like he had Saturday he can’t get out of his own head and almost shuts down.

Sark talks about his temperament as a positive, not getting too high or low during games, but I think he just doesn’t express it outwardly. I think Sark knows that’s what he does and he pulled him to try and snap him out of it. It was reported that Quinn was upset about being pulled, as he should be, but he didn’t seem upset to me. I’d like to see him throw his helmet or do something to show some emotion.

On a different note, wasn’t there a video of Ewers back in HS throwing the ball the length of the field? Is his arm too strong to throw anything catchable down field? It’s remarkable how poorly he throws deep.

Nothing like an old fashion butt kicking to get us back on track. Looks like we've not been nibbling but feasting on the rat poison. Now we know what we have to improve on to play with the best of the best. A good team would work on their deficiencies and crush their next opponent.

As far as QB, I'm not sure Ewers is 100% healthy. If he is, then shame on him. That was a piss poor game. But I didn't see anything Manning did other than scramble that showed he could do any better. He was well short on his 10+ yard pass so I think Sark was right to bring Ewers back in the second half. Sark wanted to give Ewers a wake up but sitting Ewers at the end of the 2nd quarter. I think it worked but we gave Georgia a little too much of a head start.

Regardless who is the QB, Texas needs to throw 10-15 yards down the field to be successful. These line of scrimmage sideline passes just won't do it against a team like Georgia.

I can't wait for our next game to see us a little more focused and play like the team we can be.

I think he's healthy. I just think he's in some sort of mental funk. His oblique injury wasn't what stopped him from stepping up in the pocket. His head was somewhere else.

Every starter has some amount of leeway before getting pulled for a backup in a permanent fashion.

Quinn still has some leash left but it does seem he used up some of that this past Saturday. Rebound against Vandy and all will be well but any serious struggles and we could see a QB change going forward.

I agree. And I have no problem with Manning taking over.

If I remember right, Southlake was finals of regional against Ducanville his sophomore yr. A guy rushing at him and he stood tall & delivered pass but he paid for it. Wonder if that has anything with leaving pocket to quick or the happy feet.As Bob Shipley put it he was leaving clean pocket & making it a dirty one. Bryan Irwin & Gerry Hamilton did not give glowing reviews last wk.

He’s young but many folks don’t ever get out of those mental funks…

I’m hoping he does as we have a lot of good battles left.

Based on your observations of watching him play, can QE3 read defenses? I haven’t seen any evidence that he’s any good at it.

Is it normal for a third year starter that’s a true passer to not be any good at it?

I was just watching the 1st half back, the offense was pretty sharp to start the game actually. Then, Wisner dropped that check down pass where he had a clear path to the endzone. Next drive, Ewers got absolutely rocked on that corner blitz.

I wonder if taking that huge blindside hit really threw him off for the rest of the game. That was a confidence shattering type of hit right there.

I guess im just different than most people. QE is shadow of his former self. When I watch him in the pocket after watching Milroe or Beck or hell even the Vandy QB I just cringe. Yea I know he beat Bama last year and we went to playoffs but the last 2 games since his injury he starts slow and is awkward as hell in the pocket. Our line and coaches deserve most of the blame but Quinn just seems bad right now. I am sticking to the argument that I think Manning is better right now over QE. Havent felt this way since I said Donte Foreman was better J Gray and was flamed for that one.

I saw this post on another forum so I dont know if it accurate but sure seems like it.

"Ewers is averaging 2.6 air yards per completion this season, down from 5.1 a season ago. He ranks 128th nationally in air yards per attempt (5.65), down from 7.49 a year ago, and 115th in percentage of throws 20 or more yards downfield (9.3%)."

To add on to your last point, his depth of target:
2022 - 10.5 yards
2023 - 8.4 yards
2024 - 6.1 yards

Not sure what to make of it exactly, and throwing more short throws isn't necessarily a bad thing. His 2022 deep balls hurt us quite a bit when he probably should have been throwing shorter more often.

Can fans not criticize a team when they don’t play up to their own team standards? Can fans not want more from a team when they know the talent and what they are capable of? It’s not about going “undefeated” it’s about the offense getting bullied the entire game and not playing up to their potential.

I would be most on here are happy with Texas record regardless of the outcome last night, but that doesn’t mean we liked what we saw last night.

On to Vandy Saturday, to send a message.
I don't like the results, the plays or the coaching, but it is one bad game. Criticize the scheme all you want and I won't disagree, but we are a good team that got whipped by a team who had their shit together Saturday night.
Like I said earlier QE3 should still be QB1 and the calls to replace him are misguided.

And what did Manning do? Lay blame at the feet of the OL or give credit to the UGa DL.
Maybe this what the OL needed, a remedy for the rat poison.

The only time we had a vertical threat was when Manning was in there. Manning had at least one very nice run and he passed well.

He provided a spark, IMO.
