Longhorn News/Discussion (Non-Recruiting)

If the guy doesn't want to participate playing with the team (if there is no medical reason) then I'm fine with Major's decision. Every year there are more players holding out and refusing to play as the season nears its end. Same thing with bowl games.

I know we are fans of a university over any one player however I dont have a problem with Ed’s stance. He has conducted himself with integrity his entire time at UH. He is now in a position that will benefit him and his family’s future.

If him having jacket on a cold night during a game he wishes to sit out is being a prima Donna then we might as well put every person in the stands in that category as well.

Major is a jackass trying to make an example of a player that has given more to that university than any other player.

any coach would turn their back on the contract and commitment that they have made to a university if it was for their benefit.

Disclaimer: I would hate it. If this was a UT player doing the same thing however I would understand and not fault the player.

When Colt got knocked out against Bama I thought how the hell is he not in there until someone rips his head off. I was pissed, however I realized that he at that point had given the university everything he had and it was now time for him to look to the future.

i understand this is a different scenario for Oliver however the way I see it is that it is now time for Oliver to look to the future. I can’t fault him for that.

I came from a time where you played for your team and teammates until you were absolutely incapacitated. Sitting out these bowl games or not playing when you are able to play is a hard one for me to wrap my head around.

But having said that, Oliver had done a lot for Houston, so I think telling him to take a jacket off on the sidelines because they are reserved for active players seems not a good thing to me. I think if Applewhite thought he should play, I just think I would have approached it a different way and time and not in the middle of a game on the sidelines. He should have learned from Herman that recruiting is 24 hours a day and that isn’t a good look for recruits. He worked for Saban and maybe he thought that’s what Saban would do but, he ain’t Saban and this ain’t Alabama.

Just my take. Thanks

Idk, I get it.  Major really didn't do anything "wrong".  I mean, Oliver held himself out of the game.  I personally think he's blessed that he's even allowed on the sideline.  The jackets are to keep the guys who are playing warm in between series.  If Ed is a chosen spectator, he should have brought his own jacket.  Kinda think it's "arrogant" to think he can choose when he plays and the times he chooses not to, still reap the same benefits of those who have fought and bled all week for the reward of playing the game.  IMO, Oliver may as well not play another game this season.  If draft status is his concern, then remove yourself completely from the team and wait for April.

As a fan I pay $85 to $90 a ticket and that money goes to help pay the players tuition and board. Maybe I'm not so bright but I don't see how those 2 are related.

A player commits to play for a team, they should honor that commitment until the end. But then again I'm old school.

Major has a belly full of Ed and hes full to the point of it pouring over on the sideline..  Can't blame the coach for the demise of CFB, what you witnessed was a player that should have been playing sitting out to protect his draft status and it's happening more and more.

See ya Ed, go run your mouth in the NFL.

If a player chooses to end his obligation to a school because of self interest, I may not like it, but I do understand it, kinda, sorta.

However, he should no longer feel entitled to wear team gear at his whim when he has chosen to not be a part of the team, IMO.

Thanks Ed, next man up...

If they have a rule that only active players get jackets then I don’t have a problem with it. Either the rule applies to everyone or no one. Major asked another coach to ask Ed to take off jacket and Ed refused, that’s why Major got involved. It doesn’t help the Ed is out there jumping around pregame and not showing any signs of being hurt. Time for Ed to stay off the sidelines

I'm hearing Kirk Johnson will not return next year.

Its a shame. He flashed some things when he was a freshman. Too bad he couldn't stay healthy.
Sucks for him but he has at least gotten to play some special teams this year.

I don't know the team rule BUT I'll venture to guess that if Oliver was not playing due to injury or any reason other than choosing himself not to participate in the contest, that Major would have had no issue with him on the sideline wearing the jacket...

Yes and I just saw clips of Oliver running around on the field before the game. I am not a coach but I think I would have a rule that if you are able to play and you choose to sit out so you won’t get hurt and mess up your draft status then you don’t need to be hanging around on the sidelines or with the team. I know there is a lot of money on the line to be drafted but, every coach preaches team and be one unit. Christian McCaffrey started this as best I can remember and I just don’t like players sitting out. Of course a lot of players doing it now.

These prima donnas are selfish quitters. They attained their lofty positions due in part with help from their team mates and now abandon them..

From a Link on TFB.  I do not know how to paste a link on Hornsports.

Looks like Les Miles might be joining the Jayhawks here soon
