Yes, I understand that by scoring fast causes the defense to get back out on the field, but that is not what I am talking about. I am wondering is during practice, the offense is demanding so much time that the coaches dont have time to work on technique with the defense. They said when this offense was being installed that the plays were going so fast that the defensive coaches couldnt correct the defenders. They said they would do all of that in the film room. Well...apparently you cant teach tackling in the film room
The offense most teams are running in the BIG XII are killing the defenses. As pointed out, even when the HUNH scores quickly it is almost as detrimental as if if goes 3 and out quickly. There is a physical aspect and there is also a psychologically negative on the defense. The players are learning through experience that giving up a TD is ok because the offense will get it back. That is an incorrect conclusion, by the way, and you see the players who in their hearts know they should be stopping the offense are having their spirit broken.
I think the reason why few teams have good defenses in the BIG XII is because it takes a huge commitment by the coaches and players to do it and a bunch of 2-deep talent.
Keys to stopping the Air Raid/Veer:
1. The opposing offense must not be able to run the ball.
2. Pressure and hit the QB (legally) as much as possible.
3. Tackle in space. By tackle I mean head across the bow, wrap up and either bring the offensive player down or, if you are not able, hold him up for the pursuing defenders.
4. Everybody pursues (gang tackling) within the discipline of their technique.
5. Attemping to strip the ball should be a discipline every player practices but should mostly be performed by the 2nd and subsequent defensive players who reach the player with the ball. First man HAS to wrap up.
6. Utilize the timeouts for the defense. Whether it is to allow your defense some much needed relief, to align the players properly or to insure they are all on the same page the retention of timeouts for the offense in this conference is mostly a waste.
These are things that should be ingrained in defenders before the season ever starts.
