Before I get started talking about the aggies (by-the-way, I agree with everything coolhorn has said about them) let me tell you what I like about them. Yes, you heard me, what I LIKE about them.
As a kid growing up in Austin, one of my biggest thrills was watching the Corps marching down Congress Ave. And particularly that magnificent aggie band marching as well. Say what you will, but IMO the A&M band is the best in the country - bar none. Their precision is awesome and you know those kids have to practice a LOT.
Also, when I was growing up, A&M had no Greek organizations. The Corps was its only fraternity and it was very tight knit. In fact, the Corps WAS A&M and it's culture permeated throughout everything that A&M stood for. Its honor code was strictly followed and was as admired as Strong's code of conduct.
But somewhere along the way, aggies became aggys and I believe that the University of Texas should shoulder 100% of the responsibility. We are the reason for aggys and, because of us, a fine university devolved into what it is today. As Pogo once said "We have met the enemy and he is us".
The University of Texas needs to quit pointing fingers at them and must stop deriding them as well. They are our children and the product of our upbringing. We raised them wrong and they have rebelled. The house they were forced to grow up in was a house of abuse and their sense of self worth was destroyed.
Who can blame them for wanting to leave home and trying to find some self worth? Who can blame them for accusing us of wrong doing and oppression? They are right and the SEC, if nothing else, is a form of therapy for them.
It's time for UT to face the facts that we were bad parents and we are facing the consequences of it.
