2015 Recruiting Season is in full swing

Think they did a really good job on this class. Even like the grey shirt quarterback out of Cistercian they got. Had a solid borderline FCS/low FBS eval on him after his junior year, showed everything we wanted to see and improved into that FBS category based off senior tape. Everybody else in the Big 12 knows it is just a matter of time.

On Irvin, Higdon mentioned that Irvin is making visit to Auburn, but plans to be in Austin on Sunday. Higdon thinks that if Irvin has a flight into Austin on Sunday, he would still be in the class.

Get Irvin in class next Tuesday and he's a Horn.

FWIW, guys/gals, I made a few changes to my visit list that's pinned to the top earlier today.

here is Longhorn Scott on this weekend's confirmed visits

http://www.burntorangenation.com/2015/1/14/7541247/texas-longhorns-recruiting-2015-visits-kris-boyd-holton-hill

San Jose (Calif.) Valley Christian running back Kirk Johnson -- The son of Texas legend Johnnie Johnson has been committed for almost nine months and hasn't wavered, so the value in his visit for the Longhorns is the possible impact that he could have on other visitors.

Burton athlete Louis Brown -- The former Baylor commit has been solid with his Texas pledge, as well, so there aren't any worries about him either. The 6'5, 215-pounder who will likely play the Fox end position at Texas also tweeted that he's gotten his tests out of the way and is "college ready now."

Baton Rouge (La.) University HIgh running back Nicholas Brossette -- It's not easy to pull a local product away from LSU, the school to which the 6'0, 207-pounder has been committed since August of 2013, but that's exactly what Texas will try to accomplish with the consensus four-star running back.  Brossette visited for a camp last summer, so he's been on campus before and his 247Sports Crystal Ball is actually split evenly between the Tigers and Longhorns, though it doesn't represent much of an industry consensus since there are only six predictions.  With the departure of Malcolm Brown, there's early playing time to be had and if Brossette decides to flip his commitment before National Signing Day, it could leave Chris Warren without a spot in the class.

Gilmer cornerback Kris Boyd -- The list for Boyd has changed three times since he released his top five on January 1, with the current iteration now sitting at four schools. The Longhorns have been a constant on it and remain the perceived favorite even though he tried to play off throwing up the "hook 'em Horns" hand sign after Gilmer's state championship win. Though Texas looks like the heavy favorite, watch out for Baylor.

Houston Lamar CB Holton Hill -- Baylor seems to be the most serious contender for Hill, too -- he has a visit scheduled to Waco for the second weekend before Signing Day, but he's been tweeting back and forth with Boyd this week and could be enticed to play his college football with Boyd after spending the weekend together in Austin.  Texas safety commit Jamile Johnson also said that Hill told him the Horns are his leader while in Los Angeles for the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl.
is it safe to say we might as well get a pillow and a blanket for some excitement weekend of recruiting visits? lol

I'm not allowed to make that statement ???? are you for real????? its the truth....and im gonna be honest about it...CFS has pulled out so far a good strong recruiting class..we cant be worried about this kind of stuff so i aint gonna be apologetic for that statement
That statement was used by Mack Brown his final year.... Charlie Strong is in charge now... the future is bright and now it just is....

The way I see it. If Irvin flies in on Sunday he'll be a Horn.

If not I expect Texas to move on with three higher rated DBs on the board.

Sorry for my message board inexperience. I "heard" Strickland had an offer, but it is hard to tell some times. You are right on the WR list... going to have some depth in the future. Always liked Strickland's ability to stretch the field. Saw him introduce Winfield's kid to Texas high school football in Georgetown in 2013 and always liked him since. Still like the Winfield kid though.
I agree with you, not that the coaches care what we think.

I love his size (6'4 or 6'5 and 200 lbs).  I am a big believer that this is currently an undervalued part of the college game.

Add him to Gilbert Johnson (6'5,205), Devonaire Calrington (6'6, 230) and Deandre McNeal 6'2,210 and still growing) plus 2016 WR Collin Johnson (6'5,193) and we will be in prime position to take advantage of this market inefficiency.  You could see this trend beginning in last season's scrambled recruiting class with Garrett Gray (6'5,205, who runs a 4.40) and Dorian Leonard (6'4,200).  We actually had a 3rd big 2014 WR committed but he backed out at the end.

I have felt this way for several years as defenses have had to respond to spread offenses.  So, it is gratifying to me to see what we are doing now.  Even if our coaches do not admit it publicly, it is still easy to see from the size and athleticism of the players we are targeting that they have the same idea.  To me, it's just smart football/smart recruiting.

not recruiting but thought it was funny anyway and since its from a 2015 commit

Thanks Juan for all the information today. Well Ervin could have had a good 4 years of football with the Longhorns......get some more DB's

If this occurs per Higdon Irvin will no longer have a spot in this class.
Saw that, too. Interesting. But there are a ton of DBs wanting in this class.

He keeps talking about recruits who want to commit over the phone. My gut tells me one of those is Fields.

aggy 247 has put together a list of fast rising 2015 seniors who are still available --  players who “blew up†down the homestretch.

http://tamu.247sports.com/Article/Texas-seniors-see-stock-soar-prior-to-NSD-34744377

CB ANTOINE STEPHENS, DALLAS KIMBALL
A player we wrote about back in October, the 6-foot-1, 187-pound defender might be the most physical cornerback in the country this year. He also excels in coverage, though, recording seven interceptions as a senior. Stephens picked up five offers in a single day last week and is deciding this week between Baylor, Oklahoma and Texas Tech.

WR BRANDON MARTIN, DALLAS PRIME PREP
Martin moved to Dallas from Shreveport prior to his senior year and took full advantage of the exposure gained in the Lone Star State. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound receiver was named an Under Armour All-American and looked dominant at times during practices in Orlando. Martin had wowed on the camp circuit over the summer but his qualification status is a big concern for schools. Still, he has added several late offers and plans to officially visit Kansas, Louisville and West Virginia this month.

CB NATE DALTON, CY FALLS
Another big cornerback at 6-foot-2, 185 pounds, Dalton also has the ability to play safety. He was not talked about very much at all prior to his senior year and was not listed by his coach among the team’s top prospects during the preseason in Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine. He is a long and lean corner that is not afraid of contact. He had four interceptions this year. He has officially visited Oklahoma and Kentucky and will be headed to Arkansas this weekend.

RB/LB ANGELO GARBUTT, HEBRON
Not as “off the radar†as the others prior to the season, the 6-foot-1, 206-pound linebacker was committed to Oregon State for quite some time prior to the coaching change in Corvalis. While he is a bit undersized, Garbutt simply makes plays. However, he spent most of him time his senior year at running back and several schools are recruiting him as an athlete now. In the lost month he has added offers from Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, SMU and Wake Forest.

ATH ARICO EVANS, DALLAS HILLCREST
The 6-foot-1, 190-pound high school quarterback is a great athlete and schools are projecting him at either wide receiver or defensive back. Though he does not play great competition in Dallas ISD, schools had a hard time ignoring his 1,358 yards and 17 touchdowns rushing. Evans committed to Kansas but is still planning to take visits to both Arkansas and TCU this month. Texas Tech is also still pushing for him.

OTHERS OF NOTE: DB Rodney Clemons, Katy Taylor; S Darryl Godfrey, San Antonio O’Connor; LB Malik Jemison, Dallas Skyline; OL JJ Nwigwe, Rockwall-Heath; CB Shaquille Richmond, Mansfield Timberview

IT now calling Irvin to Auburn "a done deal"

Others have already disagreed with me on this point, but I dont think Irvin is easily replaceable.

When our defense was at its best last season, we were in the 3-3-5 which effectively became our base.  The nickel was a starter.

The two who played nickel are now gone (Diggs/Thompson) and the other DBs on the roster did not get many snaps.

Irvin is the only safety/nickel we have (or had).  IMO, he is uniquely suited for this role with his physicality, toughness, quick feet and fluid hips.  We have other safeties committed but they are traditional safeties.  And although we have one CB committed and two more highly likely (now possibly even 3 more) they are all man-cover, boundary corners.  None of them are built like Irvin, with his strength and willingness to pound people.  Fields might come closest but he looks like a corner all the way to me (at least for now).

On the other hand, one of the reasons we were able to get away with the 3-3-5 so much was because of the outstanding play of Malcom Brown.  So, there is a chance we might go with more 4-3 in 2015 to better suit the DTs on campus.  if so, that might relieve the pressure here somewhat.  But, it's still the Big 12 and a nickel will be needed.

Candidates -- Jason Hall, John Bonney, DeShon Elliott, Jermaine Roberts? (Edwin Freeman is too big now to even consider)

IMO, Irvin fit like a glove.  No one else does.

Hall is a future AA. My only question with him is injuries. He played like a junior as a freshman though.

Deshon Elliott is a candidate and a half. He reminds me of Hall when I watch his clips.

Bonney is a tad slow but is otherwise improving, just not quite there yet.

Roberts is a corner all the way, IMO.

Freeman is being considered for MLB.

Losing Irvin would sting as I view him as an unusually gifted talent in a small package. I tend to think Mark Fields could serve the same role in almost the same way though. Fields is a hitter and I think he ends up at safety anyway.

That said, until Irvin enrolls at Auburn, my mind is open on his recruitment. Anything could happen, including him ending up at Texas.
