Great backup qb discussion in here!!!!

The gap used to be big not as big as fore mentioned players now.

But yes a backup center cost us a shutout. However good thing it happened against nt in a blowout. Now with those "MEANINGFUL" snaps he won't cause the qb to fumble again ;)

Since Swoopes and Raulerson are both backups and have probably a lot of practice time together maybe we don't have the two fumbled snaps. I also think getting Swoopes playing time is critical on his develoent.

Put me down for Ash needs as many reps as possible with BYU and UCLA coming up. Everything I've read about Swoops is he's not ready to play, so were in trouble anyway if Ash goes down.

I guess I am the only one that didn't think Ash looked good.  To me, he always seemed worried about taking a hit and he didn't have the arm to hit anything deep but he was killing those short passes.  If he couldn't hit those medium and deep passes against NT, what is he going to do against UCLA or Oklahoma?  These teams will start stacking the box against the run and blowing up Gray and Brown and then we will be in trouble.  I dont feel that its a question of if Ash gets taken out, its just a matter of when and I hope Texas is prepared for it.  Just my thoughts

i'm with you. in a perfect world, of course it's great to get the #2s some reps. but the O wasn't really clicking all night so getting 'meaningful snaps' for Swoopes who by all accounts isn't ready to play, at the expense of Ash getting meaningful snaps makes little sense to me.

It there is a gap between Ash and any other QB on the roster we are in some kind of deep manure. I watched the same Ash from years past. No pocket presence, he has trouble with the intermediate and deep throws. If Swoopes can't get reps because Ash is that much better than Swoopes, he needs to transfer.

Sad to me is the attendance was the lowest since the stadium enlargement. I would have thought more would have shown up to see a new head coach with a new system? This does add credence to people wanting other fans to sit down, but it would be rare. I am too old and broken to go now but in my 30 odd years of attending Longhorn games I have never been or seen anyone asked to sit down.

I know I would have not taken kindly to a fan telling another fan to sit down, However, I don't want to go where someone else went. When you say you don't believe what someone said they saw happen, that's sound a whole lot like saying someone is lying. I could be wrong.

Just my opinion. I don't come here enough to start shite.

Before watching the replay of the game I was on the side of getting Swoopes some plays, but after watching the game....David Ash needed as many reps as possible. The offense did not look good at all in my opinion. It might have been because Ash had not played in a while though...Ash had happy feet, and didn't look comfortable.

Ash needs snaps himself. Not like he played every snap last year. If Swoopes is in a meaningful game for meanigful snaps our season is done and he will learn under fire like everyone else.

Not long ago, we were arguing about whether we needed a coaching change.  We got one, and now we're arguing about the decisions made by the new staff...after the first game!  You all had good points, but the one Joeywa made about this being the best opportunity is a really good one.  Other than maybe Kansas, I don't see much of a chance for Swoopes to get playing time unless Ash gets hurt.

Just thankful the coaches don't ask us for our opinion before making a decision.  We'd get a DOG penalty on every play.  (Just kidding, I really enjoy these debates)

There have been some really compelling points on both sides of the issue in this thread.  A thread like this is one of the reasons I really like this place, (HornSports,) so much.  Nobody is dogpiling anyone else for their opinion.  Nobody is calling anyone a troll because they have a different viewpoint.  It is a, (gasp,) civil discussion about football.  I fear the world is coming to an end.  :D ;)

imho, the offense, particularly Ash, Raulerson, and Flowers needed the reps.  There will be many teaching moments this week for Ash, linemen, and young receivers.  It's too bad that UT doesn't offer a lab, FB 101,201, 301, 401...etc.  I was very pleased to learn that tight end is still an eligible receiver.

Hook 'em!

We can disagree what a 'meaningful snap' constitutes but I'd concede game snaps are valuable on some level . I'd ask however, how may 'meaningful snaps' bama, fsu, Ohio st, ucla, aggy or anybody got this week.

My disagreement with it is those who argued we lost the '09 NC because Gilbert didn't get 'meaningful snaps. It wouldn't have mattered. The gap between 1 and 2 was that much. Just like no amount of meaningful snaps would have prepped Nordgren to cover for VY in '05.

Ash hasn't played in a year. He's in a new offense and they were trying to find a groove. No problem with it.

I see both sides . .. but I agree more with S-T-P here. . .

This isn't about coddling #2, it's about getting #1 ready for a stretch of games with BYU, UCLA Baylor and OU.

But keep in mind, Nordgren was a 5th year senior .. . .I have never had any doubt, he'd have come in and drove the bus/driven the lane (reference to a hilarious fumble/dribble for a 20 yard gain vs Baylor)

Gilbert wasn't the problem in '09. . .the problem was going with Chiles over GJ Kinne in spring of '08 which leas to GJ transfering and us not having a real QB as backup. . . . .though that does not change the point here .. . .

Dude, get with the program and post links to hijacked Kate Upton shots. . .

:P
